Robins Brook, Porlock
Property Summary Robin's Brook in Porlock (Somerset) sleeps up to 4 guests in a quiet location, on a no-through road at the edge of the thriving village of Porlock, in the beautiful Exmoor National Park. It has a large enclosed garden just across the lane.
Main Description Robin's Brook in Porlock (Somerset) is a terraced 120-year old former quarryman's cottage, offering comfortable and cosy holiday accommodation for up to 4 guests to enjoy this beautiful area. It is a traditional cottage, furnished accordingly. If you're looking for a modern atmosphere and modern furnishings, Robin's Brook probably isn't for you!
It's an easy walk into the village, and there's also great walking directly from the door if you wish to explore - the road outside the cottage turns into a bridleway further up the combe, which then leads all the way up to Hawkcombe Head, high on the moors above - a great walk if you are looking for a challenge!
Sleeps up 4 guests Two bedrooms, one double and one twin Upstairs family bathroom with over-bath shower Cosy downstairs sitting room with open fire; separate dining room Kitchen with oven, hob, microwave, larder fridge and separate freezer, washing machine Private and enclosed rear courtyard off the kitchen with table and chairs, and access to a second, outdoor toilet Large lawned garden opposite the cottage, with Hawkcombe stream running down the far side and picnic table Short walk (approx 15 mins) into the village, shops, restaurants, pubs, etc WiFi, heating and electricity included Bed linen and towels are provided Arrive from 3.30 pm Depart by 10 am
Dogs are welcome (2 max) for a supplement of £20. Please do not allow your dogs on the furniture or leave them alone in the cottage.
Indoor Description Downstairs there is a cosy lounge with an open fire. There is a separate dining room - we have had to board up the fire place in this room so it is out of action. There's a TV, lots of books and games for rainy days and lazy evenings in front of the fire. Both rooms have views across the combe. The kitchen is to the rear of the cottage and is equipped with an electric oven, hob, fridge, separate freezer, microwave, electric kettle, toaster, and washer-dryer.
Upstairs is the bathroom, comprising shower over the bath (please bear this in mind if you have mobility issues), toilet and hand basin. The two bedrooms are also upstairs, one double and one twin room, both have views to the front of the cottage and you can hear the stream running alongside the garden at the front.
WiFi, central heating and electricity are included. Coal and logs are available in Porlock.
All bed linen, towels and tea towels will be provided. Please bring your own beach towels if you wish to take them outside the cottage on day trips.
Please note, there is no cot or stair gate, but there is a highchair.
Outdoor Description Doors from the kitchen and sitting room both open onto the enclosed yard directly behind the property. Access to the second (outside) toilet is from the yard.
Just across the quiet lane, a 5-bar gate opens into the lawned garden area, which is for the private use of Robin's Brook guests. One side of the lawn is bordered by the stream which runs down the far side of the garden and therefore children must be supervised at all times. The garden also has a picnic table and a lovely view of Hurlestone Down. There is a swing, the seat for which is in the understairs cupboard in the cottage. If you use the swing this is strictly at your own risk - we take no responsibility for it at all - and bear in mind that it is designed to take the weight only of small children. Please replace the seat in the cupboard to protect it from rotting.
Turn left out of the front door for an easy walk to the varied shops, pubs, restaurants, tea rooms and galleries of Porlock. Turn right to walk up through Hawkcombe woods and on to stunning moorland scenery, looking out for red deer and Exmoor ponies as you go.
This is excellent dog-walking country and Exmoor has many dog-friendly pubs and tea rooms too.
Parking There's a private parking space for one car directly opposite the cottage, with another possible space in front of the garden gate.
If you bring bikes, you can take them round to the yard at the back, accessed along the side of "High Bank" further down the road. If you do use that access, please let Mike next door know that you'll be going through his yard. We have a right of way, so this is just a courtesy to Mike.
Pets Description Dogs are welcome, and will love Exmoor, just as ours does, but please ensure that they don't jump up onto the furniture, that you clear up any mud or other mess they make, and that you don't leave them alone in the cottage at any time.
Restricted mobility There are a couple of steps up into the cottage, and a very tight space just inside the door. The bedrooms and bathroom are all upstairs, and the stairs are quite steep, although there is a handrail. The shower is over the bath so you need to be able to step into the bath to use it.
Exit in case of emergency Either out of the front door, or out of the back door and down the alley at the back of the cottages.
Christmas / New Year The cottage is not available for Christmas or the New Year in 2026.
The region
Porlock is a historic village on the edge of Exmoor National Park in Somerset, in a sheltered vale between the moor and the Bristol Channel coast. Its heritage stretches back to Saxon times.
The meandering High Street is lined with independent shops, including a traditional butcher, chemist, hardware shop, post office, two convenience stores, art galleries, a chocolate shop, and a cash machine. Most shops keep hours of 9am to 5pm, often extending during the summer season.
The harbour hamlet of Porlock Weir is approximately one mile to the west and makes a lovely walk or a short drive. There you will find a 15th-century tidal harbour, a pub, restaurants, cafes, and independent shops and galleries.
Minehead is the nearest town, approximately 6 miles away. Here you will find larger supermarkets and petrol stations (Tesco and Morrisons on the outskirts with longer opening hours), most major high street banks with cash machines, and a range of other shops. EV charging points are available at Porlock Central Car Park.

The most beautiful area with walking straight from the front door. Great to hang the car keys up for a few days! I would highly recommend, Porlock is a great village with all the amenities you need. It’s a lovely 10 minute stroll to the main high street down a picturesque lane. The local people are very friendly and always happy to stop for a chat.

When the weather is bad a real fire makes it so much more cosy. We left our surplus logs for the next visitors to enjoy. Despite this being our second stay in six months we still found plenty to do around Porlock, the great treats were the West Somerset Railway and Cleeve Abbey.

The road up to the cottage is narrow and winding, so needed to stay sober to drive there, and difficult to find somewhere to turn round. However there was very little traffic going by which made it easier with an escape-prone dog in the party and the parking was adequate for two cars. The cottage is cosy and welcoming, had everything we needed, including a good library. Hoping to go back next year for a spring break, as Porlock is delightful and lots of places still to go and explore.

Absolutely perfect location for us as keen walkers with a dog - so much right from the doorstep! We parked in front and didn't move the car for the whole stay as the well-stocked shops were just a short walk away. As others have said, there's everything you need for a homely stay (including making a full Christmas dinner) and the cottage was bigger than we expected too so we felt right at home straight away. The log fire made for a very cosy evening to relax after our walks over the moor and through hidden valleys. We loved it so much we wanted to book back in for a couple of week's time but Covid rules prevented that so we'll come back again in the summer to explore the moors when it's a bit drier. :)

We have had an amazing stay at robins brook cottage. The location of the cottage is lovely and ideal for walks through the woods and onto the moors or just exploring exmoor by car. Its only a short walk into the village to the 2 local shops for supplies or the pubs if you prefer. The cottage has everything you need for the perfect break away a fully functional kitchen and a washing machine tucked away in a small utility. The living room and dining room have open fires which create a warm cosy atmosphere. The two bedrooms are spacious with a double bed in one and 2 singles in the other. The bathroom is great with a bath and a shower. Owning a dog it was nice to find a cottagec that allowed him to come along and enjoy the walking on exmoor with us. We will be booking again. See you soon.

The cottage is in an absolute fab location - about a mile from Porlock, so lovely and quiet, and on the track up to Hawkcombe Head. The garden across the road with the brook running through is very special. Sadly we didn't get to use it that much due to the weather but managed a glass of wine one night as the sun was setting. The rooms are nice and big, we really enjoyed having the two separate living room / dining room areas. One was used for cosy TV watching and the other for dumping our backpacks after a long hike. The kitchen is one of the most well-stocked self catering kitchens we've even stayed in - it even had a pudding bowl! One of the neighbours down the road is also selling allotment veg for 50p! We would really recommend.

Positives:
Lovely location in Hawcombe, just up the road from Porlock village.
Garden is lovely although it would be nice if the swing had a seat...
Good wifi
Negatives:
Property is small, but just about coped with two adults and a 13 and 9 year old.
Kitchen very dated and not the easiest to use (we had to screw the handles back onto the pans for example), fridge door shelf hanging on with duct tape but won't support a bottle of milk etc
Living chairs are from way back when and not in the slightest bit comfortable, meaning you'll probably spend you time lying on your bed instead.
Whilst there is parking, it's on a narrow single road so turning your car is difficult (we were kindly offered the use of a neighbour's drive about 500m up the road to reverse in to).
Overall - you get what you pay for. It's cheap, so on balance worth it/good value for money. Whilst I certainly wouldn't avoid it, I wouldn't rush back again to book it - it's fine, better for a couple. If it was updated it would make for a lovely cottage.

Staines allover lounge rug and a sulpher smell near the ire place. The Patio yard was full of muck and cob wens not an easy place to relax in. The garden opposit was kept nice but the table and bench are rotting and sub into the ground when I sat on it. The cooker and oven utensils were fithy as was the fridge. A nice new kitchen let down by this. We just couldnt bring ourselves to usr it after the first night. A bit of coffee left ftlrom previos renter. NO TEA BAGS no condiments . A bottle of wine no use after a 9 hr travel to get there iwe just wanted a mice cup of tea. Had to search for instructions rang owners for this. Theyre shoved in a brown paper bag in adrawer. Takes ages to find the instrctions you need. Theyve just shobex everything in there. Carry the heavy idustrial hoover Henry u the stairs was hard work using it on their floors and rugs was hard too. This is a very nlobed cash cow for the owners whos only interest is profit. Smelt damp and musty. Shoeers not very hot and o real powrr to it either. Theres moldon bath sealant too. No anti slip mat either. Was very dissapointd with this cottage. Could sit relax and read.
