"The staff were attentive and friendly, room cleaning and restocking was on demand and was efficiently done when we wanted it. The room was at the top of 3 floors, with no lift and a narrow stairs. This would have been a problem if we had been disadvantaged in any way (or just much baggage). There was a late night fire alarm incident where all residents gathered in the reception. The staff did not really take charge and were not sure about how to cancel the (false) alarm and had to call someone...

"We stayed 2 nights. The view of Maldon quay from our room was excellent. Breakfast was fantastic. The staff were lovely. We felt the hotel would benefit from an update if possible as access to the upetairs bedrooms is appalling, through part of the kifchen which also disperses kitchen smells upstairs. The stairs are also very steep. Bedroom flooring (old lino) needs replacing as did the bed and headboard. The bathroom has been reburbished and was fine. Our room had air con which we didn't...

"This hotel is very conveniently located in the centre of Chlemsford and it is only a short walk to the mainline train station, which has excellent and frequent Greater Anglia train services to London. The hotel staff, especially the reception ladies, are very friendly and pleasant, helpful and accommodating. The breakfast buffet has now been replaced by a freshly cooked to order offering, for which you need to allow extra time. My only gribble was the breakfast coffee was tepid."

"Beautiful hotel with an amazing history. Upon arrival we received a very warm welcome, the staff were exceptionally friendly and very helpful throughout. Our room was prepared by Lindsay, Jo & Sally and they did a remarkable job it was immaculate. Extremely comfortable king size bed and the shower was fab, superb water pressure. Great bar area to relax in before dining and the breakfast choice catered for everyone. Thank you for a wonderful stay and most certainly we will be back. "

"This is a really old hotel, fully upgraded and worthy of it's 4 stars. Lush carpets, modern furniture, plenty of space and storahe. We were upgraded to a deluxe room, how posh is that, everything is so comfy, staff will do anything for you, within reason. It is very handy for the local shops and theatre. "It as a beautiful 1400 Grade 1-listed building, which was great, but I had problems with the shower. In my initial room the water was lukewarm at best. So s.all on this stay that watching the football i had difficulty seeing who was who and were the ball was. Otherwise the staff are friendly the meal i had very good.
