Where to stay in Okayama

Find the best Okayama areas for the activities you enjoy most.

Naka Ward

Naka Ward showcases Okayama's cultural heart through its striking black-tiled castle and the breathtaking Korakuen Garden. Seasonal cherry blossoms and autumn foliage transform these historic grounds into living paintings. The Asahi River frames these treasures with scenic pathways perfect for contemplative walks. Traditional museums and tea houses dot the neighborhood's tree-lined streets where historic architecture remains beautifully preserved. Visitors can enjoy authentic kaiseki restaurants serving local specialities like white peaches and muscat grapes. The area maintains a respectful, quiet atmosphere that honours its rich Japanese heritage.

Kita Ward

Kita Ward centers around Okayama Station, a gleaming transport hub where bullet trains connect to major cities across Japan. The bustling business district features modern high-rises, corporate offices, and the covered Omotesando shopping arcade with its neon-lit shopfronts. Nearby cultural attractions include the stunning Korakuen Garden and historic Okayama Castle. The area serves as an ideal base for business travellers and tourists alike. From here, you can easily explore local treasures like Hokai-in Temple and the Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art. The district quiets down after business hours, offering a peaceful respite from daytime activity.

Minami Ward

Minami Ward offers a peaceful retreat where authentic Japanese suburban life unfolds along quiet streets. This residential haven sits beside the Asahi River and the magnificent Korakuen Garden, one of Japan's three most celebrated gardens. Cultural treasures like the Okayama Orient Museum provide windows into local history. Traditional wooden homes with clay tile roofs create a picturesque backdrop for your explorations. Follow riverside paths for morning walks or admire meticulously landscaped gardens with stone bridges spanning koi-filled ponds. The neighborhood's genuine character shines through as elderly residents tend their gardens and temple bells mark the evening hours.

Omotecho

Stroll through Omotecho's famous covered shopping arcade where local shops and eateries create an authentic Japanese marketplace experience. This pedestrian-friendly shotengai stretches for several blocks, protecting visitors from the elements while showcasing traditional commercial culture. The area perfectly balances everyday Japanese urban life with visitor-friendly amenities. Cultural enthusiasts will appreciate the nearby Okayama Performing Arts Theatre and Hayashibara Museum of Art. The arcade's wooden facades and colourful shop signs create an intimate atmosphere where you can shop and dine like a local.

Higashi Ward

Discover authentic Japanese life in Higashi Ward, where suburban charm meets cultural heritage. This eastern district of Okayama city offers a peaceful escape from tourist crowds. The magnificent Okayama Korakuen Garden, one of Japan's three most beautiful landscape gardens, creates a serene natural haven. The imposing black walls of Okayama Castle stand as a striking contrast to the garden's delicate beauty. Traditional wooden machiya townhouses line quiet streets where local shrines like Saidaijikannon-in and Ani Shrine reveal Japan's spiritual traditions. Riverside walking paths along the Asahi River provide contemplative spaces for evening strolls.

"Bathroom flooded every day. Couldn’t tell if it was the bath or aircon outlet (which the lovely reception guy said), but every time we took a bath there’d be a few centimetres of water on the bathroom floor. Cleared pretty quickly. Still a bit annoying. Hotel is in a great location, close to train station / tram stops / shopping mall. Breakfast buffet standard but reliable. Staff very helpful. Would definitely stay again."

"The staff was helpful and kind right as we entered the lobby. When for a recommendations for dinner they not only made reservations on our behalf, they wanted to make sure we got there and went out of their way to give us a photo of the place and drew a detailed map for us. The onsen was wonderfull. They had everything one could wish for. 3 bathes: outdoorish, indoor hot and indoor cold. They had all the creams and soaps one could need. The free ice cream at the end of the onsen was the cherry on top. A great free washing machine."
