Sample the superb wines of the Umpqua region, fish, kayak or swim in beautiful lakes and stroll through the historical districts of this sleepy, charming town.

One of Oregon’s most delightful towns, Roseburg combines a proud history with a thriving wine industry and gorgeous natural attractions. Come here to relax, to explore the stunning Umpqua River and to sample the wares of the excellent local wineries.

Many of Roseburg’s most spectacular sights are located outside the town so it’s a good idea to have your own transportation. Follow the highway east to the captivating vistas of the Colliding Rivers Park, where the North Umpqua River meets the rapids-filled Little River in fast-flowing swirls of water.

Continue east to reach Crater Lake National Park. This lake, nestled in the crater of a long-dormant volcano, is the deepest in the United States. It is renowned for its pristine blue waters surrounded by towering peaks. Swim, fish or kayak in the chilly water. Bring your camera for striking reflective photographs if skies are clear. Spend a night camping under the stars.

Get close to giraffes, leopards, zebras and more when you visit the Wildlife Safari. This is a drive-through wildlife park covering over 600 acres (240 hectares) where animals run free in their natural habitats.

If you’re a wine buff, make sure to investigate some of the area’s many vineyards. The Umpqua River feeds over 20 wineries, most of which open their doors for tastings and tours. Follow the signs for the Wine Tour Route, which will take you to other towns and communities in the region: Elkton and Oaklandin the northwest and Winston, Tenmile and Dillard in the southwest.

Back in Roseburg, walk around some of the historical districts. Placards point out the oldest and most significant houses in the area. To learn more about the area’s history, head to the Douglas County Museum, which has more than 7,500 artefacts telling the story of the local area.

Summers in Roseburg are long and generally sunny, giving you plenty of time to explore the surrounding lakes, forests and rivers and to enjoy the wealth of outdoor activities available.
