Swim, stroll or picnic at the broad sandy beach fringed by grassy banks when you visit this seaside town steeped in seafaring history.

Rosses Point is a seaside village on a peninsula at the mouth of Sligo Harbour. Explore the shoreline to find magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean, framed by lighthouses and scenic islands. Swim in the ocean, picnic on the grass next to the shore or go fishing in the bay. Sail in the calm waters or relax in a café.

Begin exploring Rosses Point with a walk along the beach. The village’s sandy beaches extend north from town along the Atlantic Ocean. Stroll along the beach and enjoy views of Coney Island and Oyster Island. Spot the area’s two lighthouses. The Metal Man lighthouse guarding the entrance of the harbour and dating back to 1821 is topped with a colourfully clothed metal man. Gaze along the horizon to see the distinctive landmarks of the Ox Mountains, Knocknarea and Ben Bulben.

Swim at the ocean beach, which is patrolled by lifeguards in the summer. Pack a picnic and settle in for an afternoon lazing on the grassy shore. Alternatively, walk into the village to have lunch at a café or restaurant.

Stop at the Royal National Lifeboat Institute station near the pier to see the different boats. Visit the sea angling and boat charter tour office located here to book a trip and spend time exploring the waters within the bay or out at sea. Spot the Waiting on Shore monument, a bronze statue of a woman with arms outstretched to the ocean, awaiting the return of a seafaring loved one.

Look for the abandoned cottage, Elsinore House, which was the childhood holiday home of the poet William Butler Yeats and his brother, the artist Jack Butler Yeats. Explore outside the village and play a round of golf at the esteemed County Sligo Golf Club north of Rosses Point.

Reach the seaside village of Rosses Point within 10 minutes by car driving northwest from Sligo town. Alternatively, use the local bus network. Visit Rosses Point on a daytrip from Sligo town or enjoy a seaside holiday here.
