Sanibel Island Beach Resort
5/5 Excellent
"The renovation after the hurricane has made this place quite nice. The rooms are clean, and feel modern with some very considerate touches.
The area around it is still in recovery. This means limited options for food, shopping, and visiting. Plus, smells of sewage are often encountered while cycling around the area due to an abundance of portalets at job sites.
It’s been 20 yrs or so since I have lived in the area and been a frequent visitor to Sanibel. It seems like it has converted from a small island beach town with actual locals to a place for the ultra wealthy to buy their third, fourth, fifth etc. vacation home. My guess is the hurricane just accelerated that process as actual locals cash out and developers and realtors just see the land as a cash cow and a spot to build a multi-million dollar home. Sanibel, like so many other coastal areas have become, is serviced mostly by people who live off island and can answer few questions about the area and its history. It’s still a beautiful place, but it has lost a lot of its down-to-earth charm and hospitality, at least from what I can remember.
This hotel though seems to have somehow kept that very elusive low key hospitality and small town feel intact. Kudos to them and I will return again, at least until someone finds a way to buy it out and coverts it to a Marriott something or other."
