"Tolarno iS iconic in Melbourne. I remember it as an art gallery in the 1980s, when it was the scene of incredibly diverse exhibitions, managed by George Mora, the son of gallery founders, George and Mirka Mora. Mirka is renowned for her painting illustration work, with its distinctive patterning. Tolarno is a brilliant hotel conversion. Art is everywhere, distinctive recognisable art of diverse media and style. In some areas it is as if pieces of gallery have been hewn from the old walls and repurposed to continue its education and entertainment roles here. Tolarno was known for its hearty food, generosity of spirit and hospitality. All of those qualities are on display now, and the staff generate a welcoming vibe even when they are not around. One never feels stranded. The rooms are comfortable and well maintained, with a strong character of homey architecture before the ubiquitous marble, plastic and flat plasterboard of contemporary hostelries. There are no lifts and rooms are on various levels, making the place inaccessible to many, but its lack in this area probably contributes to its incredible affordability. You are right in the midst of Fitzroy Street here and on the quieter side of the street. I heartily recommend Hotel Tolarno. "

"Cannot review this property as we never got to stay in this property as it was down for maintenance and the house apparently was an apartment. The alternative accommodation offered to me was even further away from our venue and we never got to stay in that one either as the owner who never sent us the address or how to get access to it decided to cancel our booking when we were at the airport about to fly to Melbourne. Communication from him was appalling and would not recommend him at all with false advertising too. We eventually got a refund but were still out of pocket for the extra accommodation we had to find on arrival in Melbourne. Disgusted and will never use them again and certainly not recommend the owner and his properties to anyone."

"Lovely accommodation, was perfect for what we needed, very comfortable, aesthetic vibe and easy to get into. Only point worth suggesting to the host for future bookings is more information on where we could park as the accommodation listed parking available, it would have been great to have some more information or suggestions on where to park as it was street parking and most parks within walking distance had unrealistic time limits for what our stay required. Not wanting to spend ages trolling the streets for parking and having a young baby with us, we kept having to move our cars to avoid fines. "
