Beautiful deep sandstone canyon just half an hour from the college town of Carbondale (Southern Illinois University). Offers great hiking, interesting geology, and diverse biology. Be cautious where you step, three venomous snakes are native to southern Illinois and this area in particular, including water moccasin, copperheads, and eastern timber rattlesnake. However, encounters are infrequent.
