A rock formation with ancient dwellings carved into it.
Two large yellow hot air balloons with red and blue stripes, set against a backdrop of a mountainous town with unique rock formations.

Enjoy the view from the summit and delve into the intricate homes, churches and passageways that lie below the surface of this honeycomb mountain.

Uçhisar Castle is a large rock formation rising tall above the terrain like a giant anthill full of small, dark holes. It attracts visitors with its intriguing history and stunning panorama that includes the surrounding landscape and Mount Erciyes in the distance. Look for black holes indicating the entrances to abodes, tunnels and dovecotes crafted into the rock many centuries ago.

The ascent to the top of the honeycomb mountain is relatively tiring, so make sure to bring enough water. Climb the makeshift steps to the peak to admire the seemingly endless view of the town’s houses. Mount Erciyes looms over the residential area on the horizon. While you are atop the mountain, see the Byzantine graves that have survived the test of time.

The castle owes its honeycomb appearance to the hundreds of small holes for rooms in the soft rock. Rummage through the small tunnels and stairways that connect the rooms in this fascinating underground maze. Some of the rooms are now inaccessible due to continued erosion.

Learn about the people who lived in Uçhisar Castle. Notice small enclosures for pigeons where farmers collected their dropping for use as fertilizer. You will also encounter churches inside and around the castle.

The giant rock must be seen in daylight hours. It has a reasonable admission price. Make sure to visit some of the other attractions in the area, such as Pigeon Valley, where the birds were kept as pets and messengers.

Find Uçhisar Castle about 3 miles (4.8) kilometers down the road that leads from Göreme to Nevsehir. It is a 10-minute drive southwest from Göreme, which is in the center of the scenic Cappadocia region. Once in the area, it should be relatively easy to locate, because the natural giant dwarfs the surrounding terrain. You can also take a mini-bus to the castle, as they leave regularly from Göreme.
