"The staff was friendly.
Upon arrival the guest gets a yukata and a key to 9 public thermal springs around the town, where he may bath freely. Note that they are extremely hot. The staff also offers a free ride to the Snow Monkey Park or Yudanaka Station in the morning."
"Nicer Ryokan for the area. Obvious reason to stay is to visit the Shibu Onsen facilities and the Snow Monkey Park and this is a great option for those activities. Pretty close to the Shiga Kogen resort. Check the Map before booking as it is not in Nagano despite the address. Diner and breakfast with Half board was very good and staff were friendly and helpful. Free shuttles were a bonus."
"The manager (owner?) and his wife were incredibly welcoming and pleasant. They take great pride in their hotel and it shows in every aspect of our stay. "
"Excellent Ryokan. Breakfast and late night sake tasting included free. Very short walk to excellent local restaurants and train station. Very easy to access for tourists"
"We felt like we were staying with family. Shiho, Masaru and the whole team were welcoming and very helpful during our stay. Breakfast and dinner were home cooked and allowed us to sample many different and delicious Japanese delicacies. Snow on our last 2 days was magical. Thank you!"
"Owners are nice people. Seems family-owned, so very traditional and homely. However, facilities are extremely dated, and there were cobwebs everywhere, which made me highly doubt the cleanliness..."
"Friendly staff, we arrived very late on the first night, they arranged snow mobile to pick us from the carpark and checked us in quickly. The outdoor private hot tub is just what you need after a day of skiing! "
"Absolutely unique experience. If you want a fancy western style hotel, don’t stay here. If you want to have a genuinely Japanese experience, in an absolutely stunning area with some of the best snow I have seen in my lifetime, then add Kumanoyo to your list. Personally, I loved this place. "

Excellent
It's a local village. It was nice seeing the school children walking to school the first morning. Good location for getting to shiga kogen (skiing) and the snow monkeys!

Close to monkeys and public onsens (if you're in to that) short run up the hill to Shiga Kogen for skiing and not too far by US standards to Nozawaonsen

A unique, relaxed atmosphere. A nice break from the hustle from a couple days in Tokyo. Great walk through forest to see snow monkeys.

It is very important to make dinner reservations ahead of time. If you try to walk-in you will usually be out of luck.

It would attract more people if there are more food and beverage choices.
"This hotel is a beautiful ryokan and onsen. We stayed 2 nights and really enjoyed it. We ate breakfast and dinner at the ryokan and really enjoyed the food - meals are 7 courses and food quality is top notch. We would highly recommend to anyone looking to stay in Yudanaka. They have a private onsen which we also booked so my husband and I could use the onsen together. "
