About this property
58 Marygate. A beautiful and central 300 year old, 4 bedroom cottage.
58 Marygate, York (white cottage on the left in the picture) is a 300 year old cottage that has been recently completely renovated to a high standard, whilst retaining its original period features and charm.
It has a superb view from the front of the house over the entrance to the Museum Gardens and St Olaves Church. Marygate is a fascinating, attractive street in a central York location. It is not too busy, so it is quiet at night. It's location makes it an ideal base to explore all of York's many attractions, all are within easy walking distance / Minster 5 mins walk, main shopping areas 5 minutes walk through the Museum Gardens.
The cottage has been equipped and furnished to a high standard incorporating a hand made kitchen with quartz work surfaces and Smeg and Neff appliances.
Bathrooms feature travertine tiles, duravit sanitary ware and hansgrohe rain showers. The main bathroom also has a freestanding bath.
The lounge has a period Georgian fireplace with solid oak flooring, comfy sofas and 2 leather arm chairs, there is a 40" Flat screen TV.
Bedrooms include quality beds and soft, top quality cotton bedding. The master bedroom has a kingsize bed and an en suite bathroom with a great view at the front of the house. Also at the front of the house is bedroom 2 with a kingsize bed again with a great view over the front. At the back of the house is the dormer bedroom with 2 single beds and a nice view down Marygate Lane. There are flat screen TV's in all the 3 upstairs bedrooms. Downstairs is the fourth bedroom with bunk beds suitable for adults or kids.
Outside is a small courtyard area with patio furniture and planters.
There is a fast WIFI connection.
There is a large 24hr secure car park to the rear of Marygate, (1 min walk, £22 a day) Alternatively, I rent a space on Micklegate for £10 a day. Other parking deals can be found on YourParkingSpace or JustPark.
We also have a high chair, lightweight pushchair, fold down cot and toys/activities in the cottage for our guests with babies/toddlers.
There is the excellent Star Inn The City restaurant in the Museum Gardens opposite the house 2 minutes walk away. Also, the highly acclaimed Roots restaurant is just 4 doors down Marygate. The rest of Yorks' restaurants are just a short meander through the Museum Gardens, between a 5-10 minutes walkaway. There are two pubs on Marygate itself and a Sainsburys Local at the top of Marygate, 3 minutes walk away. The River Ouse is at the bottom of Marygate, a 1 minute walk away.
Regrettably we cannot accept bookings from stag or hen weekends as the property is in a quiet residential neighbourhood.

We felt immediately at home in this cosy and comfortable house. The beds were super comfy and kitchen well-equipped. The location was second-to-none, as we frequently wanted to pop back during the day with our purchases or just to rest weary feet! It was so convenient, with a short scenic walk through the park to the centre of town. We would definitely stay again. Thank you for all the useful information, Louise!
Our family stayed for a week in preparation for our daughter’s wedding in York. It was an enjoyable stay: wonderful location, comfortable accommodations, attentive host. Excellent experience.
Wonderful cottage in the most perfect location. Close to everything and across from museum gardens which are lovely. Super host who certainly goes above and beyond to ensure your stay is amazing. Absolutely loved coming home to this cozy cottage after spending the day exploring York.
comfortable, easy access to everything to all york has to offer...lovely fixtures...Louise was easily reachable and responsive...a pleasure to work with her...thank you so much for a memorable trip!
We had a fantastic stay in Louise's gorgeous cottage. Beautifully decorated, luxury bedding, comfy beds and just 5 mins from centre of York. Check in was easy and Louise allowed us a later checkout which tied in nicely with our train home. We have all agreed that we would love to come back and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the cottage to others coming to York.
We stayed in Louise’s beautiful property while in York. We were members of a family ranging from 17-83. There was ample space for recreating, sleeping, eating in comfort, and the house was immaculate and cozy. Located across the quiet street from Museum gardens and a medieval church, a short walk from the riven Ouse, the setting was idylic.
Absolutely lovely property, perfect location(close enough to everything but still quiet, low traffic). We visited from the US, traveling from Newcastle by rail- a short walk to and from the station. The cottage is in perfect condition and accommodated our family ranging from 4 to 75... grocery store up the end of the street allowed us to prepare meals at home and visit sites around York at our leisure. We could not be more happy with the experience!
We love it at 58 Marygate. It is a perfect base in York. Louise is an exceptional host where nothing is too much trouble. The cottage is exceptionally clean and tidy. We are a family of six and there is plenty of room. This is the second time we have stayed and should we choose to stay in York again, this cottage will again be considered for our holiday.
We recently stayed at 58 Marygate for 3 nights. We were a group of 6 ladies whose ages ranged from 42 years- 72 years. The house can sleep up to 8, however we felt this would have been a squeeze in the living areas if there were 8 adults, (would be fine with small children however).
The location is perfect! We walked into the centre of York in less than 10 minutes, and there is a lovely pub on Marygate which has a fabulous atmosphere so this quickly became’our local’ during our stay. There is also a Sainsbury’s local at the top of Marygate which was handy.
Our only slight niggle was the main bathroom was very cold, and could really benefit from an extra heat source in there. We also struggled to override the programmed temperature and set times for the central heating, but we could have quite easily contacted the host to rectify this but we chose not too. Both twin rooms lacked robes, and as we found the house became quite cold in the evenings, these would have been handy for all of our group to use, but there are plenty of blankets provided so utilised those instead. We really loved our stay here, and will definitely stay here again in the future.
The cottage was the best experience I’ve ever had with a rental. It was centrally located. Impeccably kept. Our host Louise was magnificent. I intend to go there again no complaints at all, it was perfect.
Perfect location for our family wedding at the Hospitium. Easy access to train, town, venue & necessities. Clean, comfortable beds & with extra thoughtful perks.Highly recommend.
Property was great, but the location was the show stopper. We loved the beautiful view and the close proximity to the museum gardens. Easy walk to the train station and lovely trek through the gardens to all of the shops, eateries, and attractions. Wonderful hostess and good communication.
What a gorgeous place to stay in York. A short walk across the park brings you right to the heart of the city. The cottage is extremely comfortable with modern amenities alongside lots of original features. We really enjoyed meeting up with family here. Thanks Louise!

Wonderful
Great house. Great location. Couldn’t ask for anything more. Would highly recommend to anybody wanting to visit the stunning city that is York. None of us wanted to leave.
This home was the perfect spot for our visit to York. The Minster and Shambles were easy walks through the beautiful Museum Gardens and the Abbey ruins were just across the street. Shops were just up the block including a Sainsburys which was very handy to have close by. The home is quite charming with a well equipped kitchen and a nice sitting room where we could all gather in the evening.
