• A plane ride can be a comfortable experience if you take the right stuff. First of all you'll need toiletry items, such as deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush, a clean pair of socks and a few magazines. Next, find a spot in your hand luggage for your electronic devices, chargers, any vital medications and perhaps a blow-up neck pillow as well. Last, but definitely not least, be sure to take your passport, travel papers and some cash.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Make sure you don't have a sharp object lurking in one of the compartments of your hand luggage. Other banned items include explosive or flammable products, such as fuel and fireworks, and liquids and gels in containers larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• Your priority is to be as comfortable as you can. Pick a pair of slip-on shoes, dress in loose, natural-fibre clothing and remember to bring a sweater in case you get chilly in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Try to walk around the cabin and stretch your legs or do some gentle exercises in your seat to promote better circulation.

• First things first. Your ID and travel documents will need to be inspected by security personnel. Keep them someplace accessible so you don't hold up the line.
