The Art Deco domes of Griffith Observatory have been an iconic Hollywood landmark since 1935. As well as playing its part in movie history, with starring roles in The Terminator and Rebel Without a Cause, the observatory has been used to train astronauts on the pioneering Apollo programme and World War II pilots. This popular visitor attraction in the shadow of the Hollywood sign will take you on your own journey through the universe to view the stars, the craters of the moon and the planets in astonishing close-up.Over 60 displays introduce the wonders of space in incredible detail. The Zeiss refracting telescope, solar telescopes and other instruments will bring the heavens into clear relief, depending on weather conditions. View the huge model of the moon’s north polar region before continuing your voyage of discovery in the planetarium under the central dome and the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon multimedia theatre.The Café at the End of the Universe displays the largest astronomically accurate image in the world, depicting the Virgo Cluster of galaxies, which can be viewed with the naked eye or through specially sited telescopes. Buy a ticket for the Centered in the Universe show, an immersive video experience which features a night sky simulation that took more than two years to create. If your visit coincides with one of the monthly star parties, you can make use of a variety of powerful telescopes to scan the skies for signs of activity.Back on solid ground, take a walk around the observatory grounds for some breathtaking views of the LA basin. As darkness falls, a myriad of twinkling city lights refract the heavenly bodies of your outer space adventure.Griffith Observatory is around 13 kilometres north of central Los Angeles. It is open from Wednesday to Sunday every week but closed on most holidays. Admission to the observatory and grounds is free, but there is a charge for some shows and special events.
