The COVID-19 outbreak has changed how we travel, but it hasn't halted our lust for exploring. Here are some tips on how to handle travel's new challenges:

• Research what, if any, rules or restrictions apply to both your destination and origin. You may not be able to travel depending on local circumstances, so check before you lock something in.
• When you go through airport checkpoints, do not remove your face mask. You will be asked to lower it briefly to verify your identity. Anyone refusing to wear a face mask may face civil penalties and may also be escorted from the building.
• To minimize the risk of cross-contamination, position your boarding pass on the scanner yourself and then hold it up for inspection. Do not hand your pass directly to a TSA employee.
• TSA is now permitting passengers to take one container of hand sanitizer, up to 12 oz (350 ml) in size, in carry-on bags. This will need to be removed from your bag for scanning.
• Remove personal items from your pocket, such as your phone and wallet, and place them in your carry-on rather than the bins. This will minimize handling during screening.
• Transport all food items in a clear plastic bag and also place them in a screening bin. Separating food from your carry-on means it's less likely a TSA employee will need to open and touch your bag for inspection.
