America’s beloved 16th president inspired many during his lifetime – this world-famous memorial continues to do so to this day.

At the western end of the National Mall, one of America’s greatest political leaders sits in solitary contemplation, his steely gaze pinned on the Washington Monument. Paying homage to the most iconic figure of American liberty, the Lincoln Memorial is one of the most recognisable and popular landmarks in Washington DC. Every year, thousands of visitors come here to pay their respects to the man who fought to abolish slavery, led his country through the civil war and laid the foundations of freedom through the principle that all men are equal.Symbolising liberty and justice, this sacred memorial has witnessed some of the greatest gatherings in American history. Fittingly, it was from these steps that Dr Martin Luther King Jr. rallied he crowds with his passionate “I have a dream” speech. Later, in 2009, it was from the same spot that President-elect, Barak Obama echoed ideals expressed by Lincoln in his inspiring pre-inaugural speech. As you stand at the edge of the Reflecting Pool, take a moment to appreciate the exterior architecture of this striking historical monument. Built in the style of a Greek Doric temple, the design is symbolic of the political landscape during Lincoln’s life. The 36 fluted Doric columns that enshrine the building represent the 36 states that were in existence during his presidential tenure. Above the colonnade the beautiful attic friezes are inscribed with the names of the 48 states that existed when the building was completed in 1922.The interior of the memorial is separated into three chambers that are divided by two ionic columns. Taking centre stage, the 5.8 metre-high statue rests on a pedestal of smooth Tennessee marble. Sage and stoic, Lincoln sits surrounded by carved inscriptions of his most famous speeches, the Gettysburg Address and Second Inaugural Address. Above each inscription are murals representing the principles that Lincoln espoused – freedom, liberty, immortality, justice, law, unity, fraternity and charity. This memorial is a great place to visit at any time but is particularly beautiful when lit up at night. A fitting tribute to an extraordinary man, the Lincoln Memorial is one of the most important historic monuments in the capital and simply must be at the top of every Washington DC itinerary.
