Pay your respects to one of the greatest American visionaries at this architecturally stunning memorial.

Sitting directly to the south of the White House, the Jefferson Memorial cuts a striking figure against the Washington skyline. Honouring the memory of the third president of the United States and one of the most illustrious American Founding Fathers, this popular memorial attracts thousands of visitors every year.Sited in the Tidal Basin at the edge of the National Mall, the route to this historic monument is a pleasant one. From the Lincoln Memorial, follow the path of Japanese cherry trees alongside the lapping waters of the inlet. These pink blossoms are stunning when in bloom so have your camera to hand.Stand at the base of the circular marble steps and admire the neoclassical architecture of the portico, circular colonnade of columns and shallow dome – all of which were designed to emulate the roman Pantheon.Climb the marble steps and pause at the top to enjoy the impressive views of the White House. Continue through the commanding columns and step inside to greet the venerable statesman himself. Looming over visitors the stately-bronze statue stands majestically under the decorative domed ceiling. The respected philosopher, enlightened thinker and statesman is fittingly surrounded by inscriptions that advocated his ideals and lifetime achievements. Personal letters, memoirs and most notably, a passage from the Declaration of Independence adorn the interior, espousing his principles of democracy, religious emancipation and the abolition of slavery. While this historic monument will be a magnet for culture vultures and historians, it’s also a fantastic place to enjoy some of the most exciting National Mall events. Come here in spring to soak up the colourful Cherry Blossom Festival or catch one of the many jazz recitals which are held on the steps of the memorial. Kill two birds with one stone and rent a paddle boat on the Tidal Basin: not only is this a great way to escape the crowds but the views of the memorial from this spot are truly breathtaking.
