"I have to start by saying that hotel rates in Monterey are extremely high, but this hotel was even less expensive than one Motel 6 I looked at. This hotel has a newer building, and the older "historic" building, where we stayed. The elevator to the historic building wasn't working, so they sent us through the back of the 4th floor of the main building, up a few outdoor stairs, into the old building. I didn't realize that some of the things that we take for granted in a hotel wouldn't be there. For example - there was no mini-fridge. One of my daughters' medications needed refrigeration, so we ended up using an insulated Trader Joe's bag as an ice bag, with ice from the hotel basement. Good thing we aren't on insulin. Maybe the newer building rooms have mini-fridges? If you really need one, ask before booking. The other thing was no USB port to charge my watch. Thankfully, I had charged it at the previous hotel. After 3 days at the Monterey Hotel, it was all but dead by the time we made it home. I think maybe the old building couldn't handle a lot electrically. The hotel has some obvious deferred maintenance, and a very small staff of hardworking people wearing a lot of hats. The bellmen are also the valet drivers, and even the repair men when the faucet in my daughters' room malfunctioned. However, I really commend the staff for being so upbeat, welcoming and helpful. It was kind of like staying with an old friend whose house is kind of shabby, but clean and welcoming."

"Was very close to the custom house plaza. Had a good amount of stores and food places around it. Very easy to get to and the staff were on top of everything would definitely go back. Room was spacious and clean"

"Don't go by the pictures!!! This was the worst place I have ever stayed and I have stayed at a lot of places. Filthy room, hair in the skin and on the pillows, the tub was dirty, the sheets had stains, the window lock was broken and the screen was hanging off, there was inches of dust all over the edges and light fixtures and the sheer's were shredded. The room as very old which is normally ok, but nothing worked properly. The fireplace was broken, the water dribbled in the sink & shower and nothing, not even the ice bucket had been replaced since the 1960"s. The outside is just as dilapidated as the inside and the parking is very tight. If you have a full sized pick up, you wont fit it in one parking spot. We came back from dinner and the spots that were left we could not fit in because the other trucks & SUV's had to take up two spots. We went with another couple and their room was even worse then ours! We spoke with the lady at the front desk and she said because they were booked, they didn't have time to check the rooms. She apologized and told us that's all she can do is say she's sorry. We asked to speak with the manager and she said the manager was not in and she didn't know his name or have his number??? It was so bad that we didn't want to stay there, but all the nearby hotels/motels were sold out because of the events taking place that weekend. We had to stay there for the night so we slept on top of the bed in our cloths and jackets. It was terrible!!!"

"Cons: The A/c was finicky and required being reset a couple of times. The WIFI router also needed to be reset. No welcome book with listings of amenities. The bathroom has no hooks to hang towels or clothes. Just the main rack. The layout was weird. No way to watch TV from the couch. Would have made more sense to move beds down by back wall and move TV to face couch and have desk by front with additional chair for seating. Pros: VERY responsive staff for when we did have issues. Fantastic mattresses and pillows. Very comfy. Very clean in all areas. Convenient access to nearly everything in Monterey and PG. very pleased with the stay."

"Very basic accommodations. It would have been nice to have more than 1 chair in the room since we are a couple and would both like to sit and relax (not in the bed). The towels were very small and thin."
