In Nice, everything happens on the water, especially on the Promenade des Anglais. On this stretch of five kilometres long beach, locals and tourists gather to relax under the sun. Visit the many cafes, restaurants and bars along the lively promenade. Admire the expensive cars on the road and private yachts in the Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels), Nice attracts the rich and famous from all over the world, from Angelina Jolie to the Queen of England.
Behind the Promenade is the old city with its buildings in art deco and baroque style, often with the typical red roof and blue shutters. Stroll through the narrow streets with traditional taverns and old churches. Visit the outdoor market Cours Salaya, where locals buy fresh local produce before stopping for a coffee at one of the city’s busy squares. Here, day and night, people are always out eating on the terraces. Taste traditional local dishes such as "Socca", a chickpea pancake, or the famous "Salade Niçoise".
The main square of the town is on the edge of the old city; the Place Massena, as it is known, is a bustling pedestrian area and a great place to people watch. Visit the square in the evenings when the square comes alive, which sees the old fountain bathed in coloured lights.
For the best views, climb the hill south of the city. La Colline du Château is now a park with interesting ruins, waterfalls and lookouts that offer stunning views over the city. You can climb the stairs or for a small fee to take the elevator, which is available from March to late October.
Nice is easily explored on foot, by tram or by bus. You can also use the cheap rental system for bicycles or do as the locals do and rent skates.
