"What a great place this is, full of character warm and friendly atmosphere and the staff were great. It was always busy with people eating and the food we had on both evening's was very good and the waiting staff excellent, we had breakfast both morning's which again was very good the only down side was there was no fresh fruit available in the breakfast room ( we didn't inquire if this was an option though ) the pub is ideally located for everything and there is parking available but on a first come first served basis although there is plenty of parking elsewhere. All in all we had a great stay and will be back next time we visit Richmond, we would definitely recommend the black lion as a great place to stay for sure."

"Very little parking available and £10 per night. But on street parking a few minutes walk or 4pm to 10am on the square in front. Not a problem. Fabulous location, probably the best in Richmond town. Lovely characterful building. Pricy and breakfast extra. Greggs or Wetherspoons nearby! My issue was with a premium room, 205. One set of curtains couldn’t be opened or fully closed. And window couldn’t be opened due to lack of maintenance. Main problem was the mattress. Unbelievably bad. It was probably very soft when new but by now it was squashed to half its original thickness. Terrible sleep. I’ve had better mattresses in $10 Central American hostels. It’s 29 years since I last stayed and despite the staff denials the mattress felt like it had been in service for longer. Staff excuse ‘we don’t sleep here so didn’t know’. Not good enough. A simple room condition inspection would have identified that. Potentially great but do the maintenance. "

"A really good location to stop overnight and very happy with the room. Breakfast was delivered in a hamper box outside our room and was rather disappointing. No egg/cold meats option. The main option was oats with fruit. We ordered with banana and strawberry. Tiny amount of strawberry and the banana slices were dried and chewy. But the evening meal was good honest pub grub."

"Don't be put off when you enter the pub, it looks very old and needing lots of upgrades. Then there's the staff, you couldn't have a better reception than here. Our room was spotless and everything that you needed was in and if it wasn't you only had to ask. It was a hot day so we could sit in the beer garden, that too could have benefited from a tidy up but it didn't spoil having a drink or two, The included breakfast was spot on. All in all we had a great stay here and we would go back. We went to the old theatre and would say that if you haven't been inside you are missing a treat."

"This is a very good option for staying just outside richmond at a very good price. The staff were excellent and extremely friendly and the food and service lovely. Would recommend and lovely view of richmond and surrounding area. Thanks team. Love louise claire and the dogs"
