Villa Antico Podere Rota (CIN IT052034C29DBJQPYG)
Detached, charming old country house (230 sqm; June-September with pool) and 7000 sqm of green space all alone for just your family or group. An idyll 5 min walk from the village and 10 min drive from Siena. Shaded parking space, pets allowed.
Former Farm (partly attested as early as the 13th century) lovingly renovated in the old style (hand-baked bricks, chestnut beams, etc.) but with modern techniques of bio architecture, we have now invested in a green future and converted the villa to be completely 'green' in terms of energy: a photovoltaic system supplies the electricity, and a heat pump provides the heating. The photovoltaic panels do not disturb the beauty of the old house but are mounted on a pergola above the parking place, which also provides shade for the cars. The villa is located on 'Rota', our own hill opposite the hill with the old village center of Sovicille (350 m as the crow flies), and promises complete peace and all comforts (large eat-in kitchen, living room, 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, equipped for outdoor living terraces paved with cotto like the Piazza del Campo in Siena, greenery, forest, large pool (9.10x4.60m, 50m3 water); satellite TV, free WiFi internet access. The location of the property (7000 sqm) at the edge of the natural park 'La Montagnola' is so quiet that the deer sometimes venture into the meadow behind the house; rare birds, squirrels, etc. live between the ancient oak trees, but this idyll is only a 5-minute walk to the village and barely more than 10 minutes by car to Siena. Infrastructure, excursions In Sovicille you can find: grocery stores, bars, restaurants, bank, post office, pharmacy, church, household goods, children’s playground, often dancing on weekend; in the neighboring village (Rosia, 5km) supermarket; outskirts of Siena (9 km) shopping center. Good road connections: to Siena 9 km (10 minutes), to the romantic bathing spot on the Merse river 8 km. The 'Montagnola Senese' Nature Park allows long hikes on excellent paths (maps in the house); The 'Via Francigena' can be reached quickly by car for a section-by-section hike; Bicycle tours through the Tuscan countryside are popular. Nearby bike rentals, riding stables; wine cellar; Olive oil.
Expressway connection Florence/Perugia/Grosseto 10 minutes away. Regular bus connection Sovicille-Siena: bus ride approx. 20 minutes; 14 connections Monday - Saturday; 4 connections on Sunday. Stop accessible in 7 minutes on foot. For excursions into the surrounding area, it is recommended to have your own means of transport (bicycle or car). An extensive collection of city, surrounding area, hiking and art guides is available in the house. San Gimignano about 40 minutes by car.; Volterra approx. 1 hour; Florence approx. 1.15 h; Perugia approx. 1.30 h; Montalcino (Brunello wine) approx. 1 hour; Chianti hills start in about 20 minutes by car; Sea: Castiglione della Pescaia approx. 1.20 h. World-famous Palio of Siena: On July 2nd and August 16th every year, Italy's most famous and oldest horse race takes place in Siena: the Palio. An event with a unique atmosphere and a tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages. Information at: www.ilpalio.org

We all really appreciated this tuscan Villa, big enough for a family of 10 or 12 (with many bathrooms!). Situated on the outskirt of the village, just next to the woods with a very nice garden and an easy to use barbecue. The owner and the landlady where very accomodating and easy to reach. Sienna is 20 minutes away and the tuscan countryside is beautiful.
A number of problems:
- the smell when we entered the property was atriocius. After a couple of days we realised what it was and Simona (who was lovely) came to clean the bottom of the old fridge in hallway.
- hard pillows and hard beds - quite uncomfortable
-dish washer not clean
-flywire screens not effective - do not keep midges or mosquitos out
-even though it was September it was quite hot - this building would be very uncomfortable in summer - we suggest air con.
- the bus service is infrequent - you must have a car
-this property generally needs updating and is not worth the price paid.
We left one day early as we were not comfortable.
The villa has a warm welcoming feeling, that clearly stems from it being a family home originally. Everything we needed was available to us including the pool, BBQ and out door eating area. The owner of the property, Bernhard, was so very helpful with assisting with taxi transport when we needed it as we chose not to hire a car. Simona was available to assist with waste disposal and pool cleaning. Sovicille, is a quite little village with all the amenities you require.for a relaxing holiday. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this villa. We would definitely stay again if we are back in Italy.. Lovely people.
Very good communication with the owner to set up kids items before we arrived and arrange a delicious homemade meal from Simona. Comfortable rooms with lots of space, the two floors of the house have separate external doors which was ideal for our two families staying at the property. Large outdoor table under shade, good size pool.

Spending time in a villa “Under the Tuscan Sun” was a dream come true. Our stay in Sovicille was beyond our expectations. It began with friendly, interesting communication with Bernhard, the villa owner. His information added to our anticipation of this vacation. He was readily available to answer any questions prior to our visit. We were warmly greeted by Simona, our local hostess. We were a party of 8…two couples and four friends. There was plenty of space, and a comfortable place for everyone with four bathrooms included. The villa was charming. We were instantly at home, enjoying meals around the large kitchen table as well as the comfortable eating area outdoors. The fact that one of our guests was an Italian chef, who likes to cook in his spare time, kept us eating at home almost every evening! The villa is located in the countryside on a small hill, just a short stroll into the picturesque village of Sovicille. This placed us in a central location to visit wonderful towns such as Siena, Volterra Montepulciano, San Gimignano and more. The people, location and accommodations could not have been better. It was difficult to leave and we all hope to return again. Thank you, Bernhard and Simona for being our gracious hosts!
Our family group of 6 adults and five children had a lovely week here. The weather was hot and sunny so the pool was very well used. Lovely grounds with views and very private. Nice covered area outside should you like some shade from the sun. The house is charming, spacious and comfortable. There is no air conditioning, The nearby small town, Sovicille, is charming and a short walk from the house, Bernhard, the owner provided good advice about places to visit within reasonable travel distance by car. The tourist information staff in Sovicille were very helpful as well. Bernhard’s communication before and during our stay was excellent. Simona, the housekeeper, was very welcoming when we arrived and we would like to commend her for the cleanliness of the house and the pool. I feel very privileged to have enjoyed a holiday in this special place.

A magic place
A family group of 9 adults, we were in occupation for two weeks.
We were utterly charmed with the house, its setting and the location, which was perfect for our multiple needs. Being within walking distance of the town centre of Sovicille, with its shops, restaurant and bars, plus, significantly. its wonderful public transport access to Siena was an enormous benefit.
We loved exploring the house and its garden, watching the wildlife, revelling in the views, and then exploring the area. Siena was the ideal centre for activities, and we didn't even bother visiting Florence in the end.
Owner Bernhard and his niece Clara, who cares for the house, now feel like friends whom we would like to meet up with. They looked after us really well. Thank you so much for our wonderful holiday!

Great place for a family holiday
This place was as described - rustic old villa in a lovely setting. The pool was great and kept the kids amused for many hours. Plenty of space in the house itself, and a good range of bedrooms and bathrooms. We used the house as a base for visits to Siena, Florence and other towns nearby. The nearest big supermarket was only a few minutes drive away and had everything we needed. The local restaurant was good for eating in, as well as take away pizzas. Everyone really enjoyed their stay.

Bella Toscana !!

Awesome relaxing vacation spot
Great location. Great property. We stayed with friends -- five teenagers and four adults -- for a week and everything was absolutely perfect. The house is roomy and quiet, with plenty of space for everyone. The kids LOVED the pool and we all liked the short walk into Sovicille. The house is located on a small hill surrounded by forest and is extremely peaceful. There are hiking and biking trails nearby, a small grocery in town and it is only a short drive into Siena if you need excitement. The owner was responsive to any questions or needs we had, which were minimal, and he was quick to reply to all queries. We will stay here when we return to Italy, no question!

Wonderful
My family of 11 had a magnificent time in Tuscany. Helene prepared a wonderful Italian dinner on one night of our stay and was the first to greet us when we arrived. The house was located where we could easily drive to and enjoy many of the Tuscany towns like Montereggioni, Siena, and Florence. Thanks also to Angelika and Clara, who were also available at times to answer any questions we might have had about the house or area.

Beautiful villa , gardens and pool. Spacious comfortable facilities. Warm helpful hosts.
We were impressed with the kind and helpful welcome from the owners. And we loved the space and facilities in the beautiful villa. The pool and gardens are secluded and so relaxing...and the whole area is peaceful and restorative. We cannot recommend it too highly.

Beautiful setting and charming house
When my two daughters asked me how I wanted to celebrate my 80th birthday I chose to rent a villa somewhere in Tuscany for three weeks. We could not have made a better choice than the Antico Podere Il Sole Rota in Sovicille. The restored farmhouse has six bedrooms and four baths and easily accommodated the 10 members of the family and close friends who joined us for various lengths of time over the three weeks. Sovicille is conveniently located in the Siena area and we made many trips to nearby medieval villages, plus special outings to Siena, Assisi, and Florence. Members of our host's family live nearby and were quick to respond when we had questions, needed translations to Italian in order to make reservations, and on two occasions to come in to prepare a wonderful meal! Many of our group are avid walkers and made numerous trips into the village of Sovicille and walked for miles around the area. You do need at least one car but there is reliable bus service into Siena and train service from there to Florence was great! The kitchen is well-equipped and the Internet connection works just fine. Not much English TV available but nobody missed it! I personally spent many hours just sitting in the beautiful yard overlooking the pool and gorgeous wooded scene. The weather was ideal - 70's and gorgeous sunshine almost every day in September leading into October. I sincerely hope to return to Podere Rota someday and was very sad to leave on the final day.

Toskanische Idylle

Home away from home
We decided to take this property in Sovicille for three weeks to celebrate our Ruby Wedding anniversary with our children and grandchildren, and afterwards for a week of peace and quiet with a couple of friends.
When we arrived, we were a little disappointed by the property … our last visit to Tuscany was in a smart purpose-built villa, and whilst spacious, this property showed signs of needing some maintenance work. As made clear by the description, parts of this property date back to the 13th Facilities were good, though – plenty of bathrooms, good WiFi upstairs (very little downstairs unfortunately) and a landline which the owner is happy for guests to use for calls within Italy.
However, what made the holiday for us was the attitude of the owner and the resident manager (his niece). We were welcomed on arrival with a couple of bottles of local wine, which was a nice touch, and whatever issues were raised were dealt with promptly and efficiently. We asked for a couple of travel-cots for our two baby grandchildren, for high chairs, for fans (like most properties in Tuscany there’s no air-con), for a replacement parasol for the pool … all were provided with no argument and no cost within 24hrs of request (high chairs came courtesy of Amazon Prime!). We had frequent phone calls whilst at the property to check that all was Ok, and a couple of bottles of ‘fizz’ to celebrate our anniversary, for which my children arranged a five-course Tuscan meal in the garden, cooked by a local caterer.
Sovicille is well located, a few km South-West of Siena, close enough for shopping and not too close to the noise and bustle. The town itself is typical medieval Toscana, with a church, a café and little else. Suited us: we wanted some peace and quiet. It’s within reach of Volterra and Montepulciano, which both provided good days out. Needless to say, any number of places to eat within a short drive .. or if like us you have young children in tow, you may prefer the inbuilt barbeque in the garden and just to chill be the pool.
All in all, within a very short time we felt ‘at home’. My children and guests were complimentary, all feeling that it was a place they could relax. It provided the perfect setting for a time of family togetherness and celebration.
