Castelletto is the name of the area where this famous hilltop is located. The actual panoramic view is called Belvedere Luigi Montaldo (belvedere means beautiful view). The fortress of Castelletto used to stand in the same spot where the Spianata Castelletto is today. In the year 1849 the fortress was destroyed, as it was considered a threat to the city below in the event of enemy occupation. Discover a privileged sight of Genoa, admire its medieval towers and the traditional slate rooftops of the houses. Take photos of the sea and ships sailing across the port. Reach the spianata using the Ascensore di Castelletto, a beautifully preserved art nouveau elevator. You’ll need a ticket to use the elevator and you can find its entrance in the Piazza del Portello area. You can also reach Spianata Castelletto by bus or taxi, via the scenic Circonvallazione a Monte, which is a mountain pass. If you are feeling energetic, walk up the hill and discover some picturesque streets like Via Garibaldi. Be aware that most of the streets are steep and narrow.
