Check-in was online only which required a smartphone and a reliable Wi-Fi signal, there are no reception staff on site during the normal working day.
The outer door was automatic so anyone could walk in. After collecting our key from a key safe we went to find our room. There was a security toggle with the key to open inner doors of the hotel but none of the security locks functioned so anyone could access all areas of the hotel. This is not safe. The only lockable door was the bedroom door. With no staff on site this is a disgraceful lack of security.
We had booked a double room with en suite facilities. The room appeared to be set up for single occupancy. The bed was a ¾ size double bed with a single mattress protector. There was only one chair which was very stained, one bedside table and one bedside light.
The bathroom was on a lower level and had three steep steps down with handrails either side. Both handrails were almost completely pulled from the wall and would have offered no support to a person who stumbled on the steps. There was no shaver socket in the bathroom and the hot water feed to the wash-hand basin was barely tepid. The shower was warm enough.
Two bath towels were supplied and two mugs for tea/coffee. These were the only sign that the room was for double occupancy.
