The air is perfumed with rose varieties blooming in this peaceful retreat, a perfect place to catch up with Tralee’s literary greats.

Take a pleasant stroll through Tralee Town Park. Find a fountain, garden of the senses, playground, walking trails and a renowned rose garden spreading its fragrance in the air around you.

In one of the largest public city parks in Ireland, explore 35 acres (14 hectares) of manicured gardens and paths. Walk or jog and enjoy the serenity. The rose garden has an area of 3 acres (1.2 hectares) and showcases 35 gorgeous varieties of every colour. In the Garden of the Senses, walk among modern sculptures evoking Ireland’s ancient past and paying tribute to sight, sound, taste and touch.

The Rose of Tralee is a ballad from the 19th century telling of one man’s love for a young nanny named Mary. Legend says that the ballad was written by young William, who was a wealthy merchant. Social differences made the relationship a forbidden love. In Tralee Town Park, visit the statue of William and Mary, surrounded by a commemorative glass wall, inscribed with the names of all past and present women, known as “Roses,” who have competed for the coveted title during the summertime Rose of Tralee International Festival. Contestants from around the world participate in this event, held annually since 1959.

Look for other monuments, including one to Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, and a modern limestone sculpture depicting a magical blacksmith. Walk on the grounds of the former castle, residence of the Denny family, which was torn down to make way for Denny Street in the early 19th century. Also in Tralee Town Park, find the headquarters of the Irish National Folk Theatre, Siamsa Tíre, which hosts performances and art exhibitions.

Tralee Town Park is a unique and beautiful escape from the busy town centre, at its loveliest when all the roses are in bloom. It hosts important events for the town including the midsummer Tralee Garden Festival and a regular Parkrun on the weekends. After your stroll through the roses, visit the Kerry County Museum next door. Tralee Town Park is next to the beloved St. John the Baptist Church.
