"Everything was just right!"
Everything about Al Cappello Rosso was just right. The location in the historical center was ideal, just steps from the Piazza Maggiore. Several terrific restaurants were within a five-minute walk. The availability of secure parking was a great benefit. The staff members could not have been more kind or accommodating. The room and its well equipped bathroom were comfortable, and exactly what we needed. The Hotel Al Cappello Rosso was the perfect spot from which to experience Bologna. If I am ever so fortunate to visit Bologna again, I will definitely reserve a room at Al Cappello Rosso again.

"A short walk from the centre"
We booked this hotel because of its rating and central location, less than a 10 minute walk from both the bus station and the centre of town. Spotlessly clean and welcoming, helpful staff and the usual continental breakfast found in all similar hotels.

"Good choice of hotel which I am happy to recommend"
It is an easy journey to/from airport, both taxi fares under 20 euros. Hotel is well located with main square etc just a 5 minute stroll away. We asked for, and got, a quiet room. Reasonable size and facilities. Everything worked. Excellent desk folk and always helpful. Good breakfast with marvellous coffee! We had only four days and on that basis I felt one day was about right for Bologna itself especially as we returned each night - decent local restaurants. The train station is 10 - 15 minutes easy stroll away but I would recommend buying tickets night before if possible. We went out on day trips to Ferrara (a pretty small town but maximum one day and with a car then maybe less), to Ravenna (sadly in the rain as though the mosaics are truly wonderful I should have loved to see them sparkling on a sunny day. Admittedly less time available as the train journey was 1hour 20 minutes but I would have been happy to spend a little more time in Ravenna armed now with some knowledge) and then to Verona which we loved. This being a spur of moment trip we had done no research and rather longer time would have been a good idea. Serendipity gave us a memorable, and pretty cheap lunch by the river. The train service is very cheap by English standards, and quite reliable. We paid more to go to Verona to gain the benefit of a non stop train, journey time 50 minutes but still well worth while.

"In town, spotless, affordable"
I studied in Bologna many years ago and knew of the fine reputation of the Tre Vecchi. As a ZanHotel it is still a wonderful place. A few things like the stair carpet from the lobby to the first floor needs replacing but it is kept clean. The rooms are immaculate and a slow drain in the shower was fixed immediately. In the heart of old Bologna, I recommend it highly. I am returning later this month and already have a reservation there.

"Lovely hotel, very we'll run and maintained."
We had a wonderful stay at Corona d'Oro. Lovely room, quiet, yet very centrally located. Met other folks staying in the hotel that we liked enough to have dinner with and talk to for several hours at breakfast. Overall, an excellent experience!

"Marvelous location, stylish accommodations"
This hotel is marvelously located just off Bologna's main piazza, with short walks to the University area and the lively medieval streets. It is also quite stylish, both outside (with sculptures at ground level) and inside. We liked this hotel second-best of the eight in which we stayed during this three week trip to Italy. Incidentally, our favorite hotel was twice as expensive.

"Great location at the right price"
We spent 3 fantastic nights at Hotel University and found it to be superb. Its location in the old town makes it perfectly placed for you to experience all that Bologna has to offer. It is also relatively cheap and is definitely value for money. In addition, we found the staff to be very attentive. Before staying at this hotel we read some reviews complaining about the noise of the bar below the hotel. While the bar is quite lively we weren't disturbed at night and were able to sleep soundly. We would definitely recommend this hotel if you are looking for a good value, 3 star hotel in the centre of Bologna.

Pocket Guide: Bologna Historic Center Hotels

Famed for its medieval towers, Bologna's well-preserved historic center is where visitors can climb the Asinelli Tower for panoramic views of the city's red-tiled rooftops, including the Basilica of San Petronico on Piazza Maggiore. Extending from the piazza, over 40 km of porticos provide shelter for pedestrians. About a 10-minute stroll east, the venerable University of Bologna dates to 1088.
