"This was amazing! Great staff, great location AND there's even a swimming hole (5 min walk, if that) with a waterfall! I've never stayed in a shared house before, but this one has spoiled me! It's close enough to be able to drive to all the good tourist spots. Oh, and hopefully you're there for the "big" farmers market on Saturdays. If I get back to the Big Island I'll be coming back here! Thank you for the great time!"

"Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was very happy with the location. I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: This is our second time staying at Lava Rock Retreat. Two years ago, we stumbled upon this fabulous rental, and now we are fulfilling our promise to always add a few days here on every future Hawaii trip. We planned time here with the full intention to just enjoy the peacefulness of this property and keep the sightseeing activities to a minimum – that’s how much we love it. This home is pristine. Nothing is out of place, even the utensils are still perfectly aligned (which suits my OCD tendencies very nicely). I was so happy to see that there is not one sign of wear and tear at all, it is still in the same perfect condition we found it the first time. And bonus - the evening rain paired with the coqui frogs mating call creates the perfect symphony to which we fall asleep very easily.The owners are very sweet, non-intrusive, and have thought of every single detail in this home to ensure your stay is perfect. Will keep returning even after we've exhausted every activity, tourist site, and restaurant Hilo has to offer...because it is just such a treat to stay here. Aloha!"

"it’s a nice location, but there’s a lot of construction going on not only in the surrounding landscape but also inside the hotel. There’s a resort fee being charged every day and it’s really just a simple pool. Nothing fancy I wouldn’t say it’s really a resort. A resort really does have quite a few other amenities. There’s only one restaurant and room service only comes every other day. also, for those people who are in a balcony room in the front of the hotel, you’re going to hear a loud buzzing noise every time he goes, sit on the patio from some transformer downstairs."

"This was the most wonderful place we have ever stayed in. It was tastefully decorated with a beautiful yard and a great koi pond. We enjoyed preparing and eating meals in the outside kitchen, being part of nature. The hosts were very kind and friendly. We would definitely stay here again!"

Escape to your private oasis perched on a cliff with a jungle view

"We throughly enjoyed our stay. The owners greeted us with a small gift for our anniversary (was was yummy). They also provided us with a link to watch the fountain eruption happening at Kiluea. Parking was a breese and the accommodations were great for 2 people. The view is lovely and you are just far away enough from town to feel like you are in the country but close enough that you are anywhere within 5/10 minutes. "

"We really enjoyed this property. It’s an excellent choice if you don’t need a kitchen for food prep. The room was nicely finished and furnished, it had everything we needed. It overlooks a large jungle-type landscape with a lot of island vegetation. Just beautiful. Hannah and Tanner were very responsive to any questions we had. A really nice experience. Mahalo!"

"This is a beautiful off-grid house conveniently located just a few miles from Hilo. Very peaceful and beautiful surroundings. You are off-grid with solar power unless the sun is gone too long, then they run a generator for you. Off grid toilet, also. Most peaceful place we have stayed. Nice hosts."
