Be inspired by the decorative art exhibits at this university museum in central Iowa, where small-town America meets global culture.

As the only accredited museum dedicated to decorative arts in the entire state of Iowa, the Brunnier Art Museum is truly exceptional. Inspect its dazzling permanent collections of ceramics, jewelry and dolls, as well as regular rotating exhibitions.

The museum’s location on the campus of Iowa State University is no coincidence. Brunnier Art Museum is named after Henry J. Brunnier, who attended the university and is the museum’s benefactor. Before or after your visit, get a sense of the local culture while wandering around the campus and stopping to chat with students milling around.

Enter the performing arts and conference complex that houses the museum. Take your time as you wander from one exhibit to the next. Explore the agricultural section with its intricate metalwork, spend time admiring the decorative glass and walk down rows of original paintings and detailed sculptures.

Among the museum’s most popular areas are its decorative glass and crystal rooms. Here, you can see a wide array of different types of delicately blown glass and shimmering crystal. Most pieces have small plaques next to them with more information on the artist and the meaning behind the piece. Ask a museum employee for more details about any artworks that particularly interest you.

You can also see decorative textiles, carpets and furniture that are part of rotating exhibits. Other visiting collections often include lacquered objects, wood and silver. Check the schedule of exhibits and events ahead of time to try to attend a lecture on the museum’s art. For a guided tour of the museum, gallery walks are often available.

The easiest way to get to the museum is to drive to Iowa State University and then walk through campus. Free parking is readily available nearby. Bring cash to pay the suggested donation fee, though the museum is technically free to all regardless of payment.

The Brunnier Art Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday year round.
