I loved this inn! We had probably the nicest room I’ve ever stayed in anywhere. Beautifully appointed, newly renovated, absolutely amazing. The restaurant attached to the inn was absolutely fantastic as well.

A lovely 1 night stay at The Lion. Just me and my dog - they are very welcoming to dogs. Room was clean and warm with good quality toiletries and tea/coffee. Bed was very comfortable. I had dinner in the evening which was excellent. The dining area had a friendly, lively atmosphre and the pub in general is a perfect old-style place with good beers on tap but also a gastro-pub style menu and wine list. Breakfast in the morning was also just as you would want it - I had the full English which set me up very well for the day. Took a walk up to Belas Knap Long Barrow and then Cleeve Hill - both highly recommended if you want to tire your dog out and get some magnificent views yourself! I only saw the town/village when everything was closed but it looked like it would be well worth a stroll round - I would have liked to stay to browse the second hand bookshop (I tihnk it's called Books & Ink) but sadly did not have time. Really good stay - I hope to return.

Cheers!!
My husband and I spent Christmas at the Lions Inn. The manager and staff, (cheers to our delightful breakfast server) were so professional, kind, and joyful. Lion Inn was a magical place to celebrate the holiday. Excellent room, food, and hospitality and staff.

The hotel has a warm friendly atmosphere however there were issues with room 9, the heating wasn’t working and the electric sockets kept tripping out and eventually we had to move rooms late at night. There was no coffee in the second room and we had to raid room 9 for some coffee, good job we still had the key! We were attending a family funeral in the morning and specifically asked what time breakfast was. We were told 8.00 am and as we were due to leave for the funeral at 9 this seemed okay. However at 8 in the morning were told breakfast was not until 9. We ordered something simple. Scrambled egg and bacon butty as we did not want impose on the helpful staff that were in early. The staff did make every effort to help but it took the shine off the stay. Not helpful when information given the night before was not accurate.

Noisy room and staff was not welcoming. Pushed us to get breakfast which was extra and got impolite when we declined. We could hear other guests through the walls.

The hotel claimed not to have received the message I sent via Expedia in response to their question on when I would be checking in. I had asked for early check in for a wedding. The member of staff was quite rude when I explained I had messaged them with this request and was disappointed the room was not ready. I had to change in the pub toilets. When I explained that we would be back late from the wedding the key to my room was conveniently available. That aside the room was very nice and breakfast was great, although we could not get any water out of the shower the following morning which was disappointing for the price paid. The room faced the road and it was quite noisy from 7.00.

More of a whimper than a roar
The Lion Winchcombe. There are a number of issues with this hotel. The checkin seems a bit casual and offhand. There is no credit card authorisation to cover any extras. Most of the staff are delightful but some are very offhand at times However, it’s a quaint real-feel local pub with a good restaurant and some rustic hotel rooms and serves a fine breakfast. These further comments relate to our experience of room 2. The challenges of bathroom access (low ceiling and step entry) are clearly products of the age of the building, which is also part of its charm, of course. However these features might be a serious physical challenge to some and this could be made clearer at the time of booking. There are some issues of substantive concern in a hotel of this star rating. The liquid stain on the carpet in the room, the overpowering smell of cigarette smoke when you enter the room, the mould in the shower, the leaking toilet cistern when flushed, the TV remote control that periodically loses contact with the TV and the battery cover for the remote that falls off every time you pick it up and which we eventually had to fix with a Band-Aid. Because of the rooms location over the bar it is pretty noisy at night until after 11pm. Would I go to the lion for dinner and a beer if I was trapped in Winchcombe for a day…yes definitely. Would I choose to stay in room 2, not so much.

Top notch
Really lovely hotel, well kept and clean. Was very pleasantly surprised to find a cafetière and ground coffee in my room, that’s a rare gem. The pub is very popular and I understand why, it has great food (lovely breakfast) and five star service. My only note would be that some rooms are right by the outside pub garden so may have some noise but the room seemed to block out most of it. I was fine with noise levels but maybe check where the room is before booking if you need complete silence. I can’t fault the place at all, was excellent.

Sunday evening stopover.
Gorgeous room, clean, comfortable, high standard of finish. Shortage of surfaces in the bathroom for toiletries. A shelf or unit would be useful. No food on Sunday evening and no breakfast Monday mornings as kitchen closed. Bar was also closed (around 9.30) when we returned from a local pub after dinner. Otherwise fabulous and would return.

The building is so beautiful! The pub was comfortable with indoor and garden seating. The chef arrived a bit early in the morning to make breakfast. However, my room had intermittent loud sounds from equipment all night long. I did not sleep. There is no air conditioning so on a hot night, the room is quite warm.

A TOTAL GEM IN THE COTSWOLDS!
Having visited the Cotswolds many times as one of our favourite staycations. The Lion Inn was the best hotel we have stayed in. Leanne and Ula are a credit to the business. Room 4 a feature room was absolutely beautiful and very spacious. Being situated in the centre of the town was fantastic with all the lovely little boutiques and restaurants right in the doorstep. Sudeley castle is situated in the town and you are only 8 miles from Cheltenham! The breakfast at the Lion was amazing. We had supper on tfe first night which was also very good and Leanne’s cocktails a MUST!! We can’t wait to go back. The Halls

Nice for a 1-night stopover.
Spacious room with a large bathroom. Bed was comfortable, as was the room - except heating seemed to be on a timer (ie didn’t come on until evening) and shower wouldn’t give any water in the morning until heating came on at about 8am, so had to wash at the basin! Pub food was good, though limited for children. Not sure if there was hotel parking, we parked in the street (which is 1-hour restriction from 8am-6pm, but we didn’t get ticketed! Friendly staff.

Cotswolds Break
So ... like a true northerner, I'm going to be brutally honest about this hotel. It's amazing!! We stayed here for 3 nights between 16th -19th August, check-in was hassle free and we were greeted at the door by friendly members of staff who couldn't wait to welcome us. We booked a classic double room for me, my partner and our dog. The room (number 8) was well presented, very clean and had everything we required for a lovely stay. Contrary to another guests review who stayed in this room recently (and brought a tape measure), the room was big enough for us 3 and all of the bags too! Cleo (one of the managers) was amazing from the start, we received a complimentary upgrade on our first night due to availability and we're not disappointed by the 'Suite' (Room 7) which comes with a larger overall amount of space, a roll top bath and a small balcony with table and chairs to enjoy a lovely evening beverage or a relaxed breakfast in the morning if you'd prefer. Full review can be found on Trip Advisor (Hotel). Thanks once again to all of the staff who made our trip so very special! Si and Jess xx

Overpriced small noisy room
We booked a 4 night stay at the Lion Inn and the room we were allocated was at the rear of the pub on the ground floor. Two outside walls faced onto the pubs beer garden and had one small windows in each wall - in order to maintain some kind of privacy when in the room it was necessary to close the internal blind/shutter otherwise customers in the beer garden could look straight in. The beer garden backed onto the short stay car park and provided emergency access at night as no staff were on the premises at night - this meant that we felt we couldn't open a window at night as access by anyone was readily available from the car park - one night the security light outside our door came on which was rather worrying. We were also disturbed early in the morning by staff rearranging beer garden furniture and contractors doing gardening/ weed killing jobs. We did not opt for the pub breakfast as it was expensive and we prefer a continental breakfast - so we went to the bakery in the street and bought croissants etc and used the coffee machine in the room and had breakfast at the table directly outside our room - luckily the weather was good. The room itself was much smaller than I expected for the amount we were charged - 4.5 metres by 3 metres approximately, the ensuite was fine. To summarise we felt that bearing in mind the location of the room, its size, noise and lack of privacy from the adjacent beer garden the price was extortionate - £80 - £90 would be more appropriate.
