"Great Hotel"

"Hotel is run by James and Susan with some additional staff. The check in was quick and friendly, our room clean with view of the river, good shower. We ate twice in the evening and food was good. Breakfast was in the Admiral's room which was well decorated, bright and atmospheric. The building dates back to 1422 and has had several extensions and repurposed from the original court house to an Admiralty rest house to hotel and pub. The external fabric could do with some maintenance and decoration. Would book again."

"We had a lovely stay here. Our room was a good size, as was the bathroom, including a jacuzzi bath. We enjoyed the little extras, such as fruit and cookies and bottled water. The bed was really comfortable and we had everything we needed. The hotel is in a good location to enjoy Hadrians wall and the roman forts, also the Sycamore Gap walk. The food and service at breakfast and dinner was very good. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. There is also a star gazing observatory on site, which we have enjoyed on a previous visit."

"Clean room, good shower. Heated rack in bathroom is nice for drying hiking clothes. My room faced the river and had a wonderful view. The mattresses needed to be replaced. There was a clear divot in the middle of each. There are no elevators and no bellmen but the man at reception very nicely brought my bag up for me. Dinner in the restaurant was really good and the cafe across the street was also quite good for lunch. Didn’t eat breakfast at the hotel so don’t know if it was worth the price. Hotel is right on Hadrians Wall trail and only a short distance from Chester’s Roman fort so if you’re hiking it’s a great location."

"I love the County Hotel have stayed there many times. Fabulous friendly staff. The lunch menu is varied and delicious and the breakfast is great with local ingredients. You are made to feel so welcome. We stayed in room two which was lovely, with a fab bathroom. Only problem I found as someone with arthritis is the quite deep 3 stairs leading to that particular room. I think a small handrail would be helpful. Also what happened to complementary water in the room? Apart from that I would recommend The County 100%. Well done everyone."
