Pocket Guide: Naples Posillipo Hotels

Posillipo is an area of Naples on the northern side of the Gulf that curves long and thin around the coastline. Traditionally one of the wealthiest and most desirable parts of the city, Posillipo is filled with grand mansions that back onto the water, many of which have private piers for their own yachts. One of the Italian president’s three official residences, Villa Roseberry, is located here in Posillipo. If it’s good enough for the president….

So there are big houses and lots of money – what does that mean for hotel prices? Well, while some buildings may still be inhabited by wealthy Neapolitan families, plenty of others have been taken over by reputable hotel chains. Others have been split into apartments and there is even a scattering of simple three-star bed and breakfasts. In short, there is an impressive range of accommodation options.

Climbing Posillipo Hill

If there is one reason to visit Posillipo, it is, simply put, the view. From the top of Posillipo Hill, you can look across to Naples, admire the stunning coastline and even catch a glimpse of Mount Vesuvius in the distance. Walk up the hill or take the bus or metro line. A small shop at the top serves refreshments to panting hikers.

A Slice of Roman History in Posillipo

Posillipo is a mainly residential area, but hidden among the houses are a few sites of note. History buffs will enjoy the ruins of an ancient Roman villa at the base of Posillipo Hill, as well as the remains of an amphitheatre built into the hillside. Access is via the Grotta dei Seiano, a cave running under the hill, and is enough to make you feel like Indiana Jones.

The Roman poet Virgil was particularly fond of Naples and requested that he be buried there. The location of his tomb is said to be at the base of Posillipo Hill, and indeed there is a tomb there. But as to whether Virgil was buried there or not, it has never been verified. The hill does have two parks dedicated to Virgil, however, with one at the top and the other below.
