Telford

Travel Guide

A modern building complex with a reflection in a calm water body, surrounded by trees and urban structures.
A narrow street lined with brick buildings, including a green iron merchant shop and a Foundry.
A brick-walled corridor with a metal staircase and a warning sign about lighting and sound effects.
A tree-lined path with fallen leaves and a metal fence on one side.
A modern building complex with a reflective water feature in the foreground.

Its Iron Age ruins and Victorian vestiges trace an industrial path to the present, in which nature trails, rope courses and zoos lure families to its leafy terrain.

In the heart of England’s West Midlands mining district lies the modern town of Telford. Commercial streets and leafy parks fill the small town centre, while the museums and disused iron factories of the iconic Ironbridge Gorge enclose it. Wander through the central district, before exploring the quaint villages that decorate the Shropshire countryside.

The village’s crowning feature is Telford Town Park, an expansive green space with sports fields, children’s play areas and fun activities. Balance on the aerial ropes course and discover historic ruins on the nature trails.

Bring your kids to the Telford Ice Rink and peruse the stores and restaurants in the Telford Shopping Centre. On sunny afternoons, family adventures take the form of trips to the Exotic Zoo and the Hoo Farm. Investigate regional history at the hilltop Iron Age fort of The Wrekin.

Travel south to the northern bank of the River Severn for the village of Ironbridge, one of the cradles of the Industrial Revolution. Cross the 18th-century Iron Bridge that has long been at the heart of Shropshire’s development. Examine local history in the nearby Museum of the Gorge and the Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron.

Inspect the mosaic panels of the Jackfield Tile Museum in Jackfield, where the redbrick ruins of the Bedlam Furnaces create an intriguing roadside scene. A little southeast along the river, see Victorian ceramics and bottle-shaped kilns at the riverside Coalport China Museum.

Travel back in time to Blists Hill, a replica of a typical 19th-century village. Tokens are used for purchases in the industrial complexes and traditional cafés and pubs dotted around the three sections representing the countryside, the industrial sector and the town centre.

The town sits between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton in the county of Shropshire, near Wales. Travel to the Telford railway station and get around the central district on foot.

With its impressive bridge, museums and scenic park, Telford evolved with the industrial growth of the nation.
