Things to do in Fès-Meknès

Activities, attractions and tours

The Chouara Tannery of Fez, Morocco dates back to the 11th century, it operates much the same way it has since its inception.
In this photo a young man dyes the hides of cows, sheep, goats, and camels inside of stone vessels. The solution that they use to clean and soften the skins is a mixtures of cow urine, pigeon feces, quicklime, salt, and water. #history
The Medina of Fes El Bali is the biggest Medina in Morocco and it´s full of life!
Madrasas, fondouks, palaces, residences, mosques and fountains are everywhere! But, be careful, this Medina is also the most labyrinthine, so my advice is to have a local and official guide with you, especially if you have no much time to visit the city because you´ll probably get lost more than once! ;)

It's quite a walk from the medina, and when you first walk inside it doesn't seem to impressive. But the longer you stay, the more impressive it does become.

Wander through the large halls, admire the architecture and head out back to the long rows of stables...it's a cool place to spend an hour.

Leather tanning has been an important industry in Fes for centuries. The smell makes the area of the city hard to miss.
While you're shopping for gorgeous handmade gifts to take home, ask the store owner to show you to the roof so you can see the process firsthand.

Leather tanneries in Morocco still follow the old ways. Hides are soaked for a few days in vessels full of cow urine, quicklime, water and salt before being picked at and dried. Imagine the smell.
