The Cosy Cottage

Thank you Chris for a lovely stay at Garth Cottage. Heating great, beds comfortable and everything spotless. Although we only had three nights we were able to do quite a lot of walking a round the area and visit historic Coniston because of the easy access from Garth Cottage.

Lovely cosy cottage. Well equiped and spotlessly clean. Lovely location overlooking allotments with a friendly scarecrow. No parking in front of cottage (,parking in layby 50yrds up the road), which is a minor inconvenience but manageable. Would stay again if looking for a quiet & peaceful weekend.

I nearly didn’t book due to some of the reviews, however I needed somewhere peaceful and decided to go for it. It’s an old cottage with thick stone walls expect issues that come from that but it’s in a beautiful location it’s so quiet and rural overlooking allotments and a village green. Awaken to birdsong and be lulled to sleep by the peace. While the cottage is in a little village you are in between Ulverston and Coniston short drive either way, on the outskirts of Ulverston there is a large supermarket to get your groceries, mountain warehouse and a large crystal shop along with petrol stations and a McDonald’s if you fancy. The bed is one of the comfiest beds I’ve slept in, as I said it’s old and in some people’s eyes a little outdated but for me it just added to the ambience and I loved my week away, wish I could have stayed longer possibly forever.

The Cottage and general location where great, the cottage was clean, tidy and had a wood burning stove that warmed the room up quite quickly once lit, the place where the cottage is situated is fairly central to most of what the Lake District has to offer. Our biggest problem was with the parking, the designated parking area for the cottage was further up the green from where the cottage is situated. When we arrived we parked outside the cottage just to have a quick look on the cottage name plaque to make sure it was the right address, almost immediately a woman came out of the end cottage and started complaining about where we had parked, we pointed out to the woman politely that we would literally be parked up there for a couple of seconds so we read the cottage name plaques, despite out explanation she continued to complain and was quite off with us. The next day when we returned from a day out we noticed that the designated parking area some 20 metres further up from the cottage was full, there was nowhere else to park other than in the parking spaces that were attached to the row of cottages that we were staying in. We parked in one the neighbours two parking spaces and left a polite note explaining that the parking space further up from the cottage were full and asked if he could call at our cottage so we could move our vehicle to allow him to park in his parking space. An hour or so later he banged on the cottage door whilst I was taking a nap and began shouting aggressively at my wife who is in her 60s, he was a young man aged around 30 years old, he was rude, intimidating and very aggressive, this left my wife scared and she was still shaking when I woke. I went out into the Garden to see if I could see the man who shouted at her, as soon as he saw me he scurried off into his cottage and locked the door, we never saw this aggressive cowardly bully again. On Monday morning when we were loading the car up ready to leave, we parked the car up outside the cottage as neither us are capable enough to carry heavy luggage the 20 metres to where car was parked further up the Green, as soon as we began loading bags and cases into the boot the woman from the end cottage once again came out and started complaining, we explained that we would literally be there for around two minutes, but she wasn't interested in our explanation and carried on complaining in a rude manner. This trip was meant to be a Birthday present for my wife, but was spoiled by a petty and aggressive bully who had no problem shouting at an older woman but ran off when confronted by an older man.
