Keats Barn forms part of what was the Sun Inn, situated in the picturesque village of Ireby near Caldbeck and Uldale. The building dates back to the 17th century when the inn was the focal point of the village. This stunning barn conversion sits in an enviable position, and offers a combination of period style with contemporary fittings and finishes. Here, ancient wooden beams, a cosy wood burner and original stonework blend comfortably with modern appliances, creating a rustic yet homely feel.
It is named after John Keats who visited the village of Ireby on a walking holiday, and for whom the Sun Inn was a popular local haunt, making favourable comments about the area and its people in his writing. Other visitors who favoured the inn include Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins.
Designed to provide a stunning view over the Uldale Fells, the property is arranged with the main living accommodation on the first floor. This large open plan living space with apex beamed ceiling offers a comfortable seating area around the wood burner, and a well-equipped kitchen/dining area. The entrance on the ground floor opens into a bright hallway, perfect for leaving your coats and boots to dry after a good day’s walk.
The gardens are ideal for your dogs and sitting and taking in the views. There is a firepit from where you can sit and gaze at the night sky with a mug of hot chocolate and some toasted marshmallows. Depending on the time of year, you might see red squirrels at the feeding station, bats and many species of birds including buzzards, gold finches and house martins. Chickens live in the bottom garden and will provide you with fresh eggs for your stay. An EV point is available to use while staying at Keats Barn (charged separately).
The surrounding area is ideal for walkers, surrounded by grazing sheep and an abundance of birds and wildlife. Ireby is a very friendly village with a local pub to join in with conversation. The hills at the back of Skiddaw and Blencathra are within easy reach and there are many gentle walks to be had around the local Ireby and Uldale area. The village is also served by a farm shop selling fresh milk, eggs and seasonal vegetables. Beach 15 miles. Caldbeck village shop 6 miles. Pub and restaurant in the village.

Jen and John are fantastic hosts. Nothing was too much trouble. Keats Barn is cosy and very comfortable in a lovely quiet and unspoiled area of the lakes.

Wonderful accomodation, completed to a high standard. Unlimited wood for burner, and nice and cosy, with a large back garden looking over fields and hills. Pub up the road, but check opening times. Some lovely places to visit nearby, exceptional place to stay.

We had a great stay in the peaceful village of Ireby. Our hosts, Jen and Jon, were very welcoming and helpful. Lots of nice touches in the comfortable cottage which we were very grateful for and certainly made all the difference.

This is a beautiful barn conversion with its clients and doggy friends at the heart of its reason for being. There is everything that you need for a very comfortable stay. If you forgot your dog treats or their basket, don’t worry, that's been taken care of. With a bottle of wine, fresh free range eggs, bread and milk all ready to welcome you. We used the bed in the back bedroom and it was one of the comfiest nights sleep my husband and I have ever had away from our own bed. Jen & John make you feel most welcome and are ready on hand to give advice on local walks, attractions and where to eat. That said, the local pub is only 100 paces away from the barn door, where all the locals made us feel welcome and the food was delicious. Both my husband and I can’t wait to return next year.

Gorgeous property, spacious yet cosy. Perfect for 4 adults and even kids. A bit far from shops and restaurants, but overall a gem. You won't regret booking this place. Great for those looking to get away from a busy city.

Wonderful cottage, a real home from home, everything you need is available for a holiday with family & friends. Also very dog friendly with a lovely fully enclosed garden looking over the Cumbrian fells.

We had the best time at Keat's Barn having a little family break to celebrate my partner's special birthday. Jen and John are excellent hosts and have thought of everything, nice welcome pack with eggs from their chickens, toys for my little boy to play with and a comfy travel cot which any parent will know is worth it's weight in gold! The Barn is well equipped and I had totally over packed as they provided everything. I was initially concerned about how suitable the Barn would be with a toddler but Jen was quick to reply to my texts and as promised a stairgate was in situ for when we arrived. It really was an ideal place for us, we are already looking at when we can sneak back for another couple of nights!

We had a fantastic stay, the owners went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The cottage was clean throughout and a good welcome pack. The local history book was a good read and allowed us to know about the old church and had it as one of our walks. The location was perfect for us, quiet and out of the way but not too far from the Lakes or large towns when needed. I'm glad we found this and would love to return.

Very well appointed property, tastefully decorated and well equipped, and unlike many properties in the area, does not suffer from damp. Nice welcome pack left by owners. Nice to stay in a dog friendly property which was well decorated and maintained. Everything you might need for a week away has been considered and provided. Friendly accommodating owners. Nice local pub serving good food a 2 min walk away.

We thoroughly loved our week at Keats Barn! It was spotless! We were welcomed with wine, milk, eggs, tea & coffee from the truly lovey owners. The views from the garden are stunning with hens in an adjacent field. The bed was comfortable with crisp bedding. Our two dogs had plenty of room to chill out in the hall. The open plan living room & kitchen is spacious and cheerful. We are looking to return in a couple of months.
