Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and is located in a wide valley next to the vast and spectacular Lake Zurich. Since the stock market and almost all the major banks are located there, it’s considered the economic centre of the country. As such, it’s a popular destination for business travellers from all over the globe.
Zurich has several faces that together make interesting mix. On the one hand, it is reminiscent of an idyllic Swiss mountain village, thanks to its historic churches and narrow streets. On the other hand it is a city of today, with modern architecture, the latest fashion and trendy nightspots.
Despite its reputation as pricey, it’s still possible to find a cheaper accommodation in Zurich and surrounding area. There are fifteen two star hotels available in the area. Most have high speed internet and some even offer complimentary breakfast.
There are a handful of two star accommodation located in Old Town, the historic city centre. In the south of the Old Town you’ll find one of Zurich’s major attractions, the Fraumünsterkerk. Walk across the Münsterbrücke and visit the Grossmünster. Within walking distance of these is the Bahnhofstrasse - the main shopping street - and the picturesque Augustinergasse.
There are a number of three star hotels around the city. You’ll find some in the Old City, within walking distance of the National Museum of Switzerland and the Museum of Design. There are also a couple in the Industrial Quarter: this district, northwest of the city centre, has a trendy, industrial character and the old factories have now become art galleries and theatres. You will also find the Bäcker Park, the Kanzlei flea market and all kinds of trendy clubs and restaurants around here.
There are about 50 four star options in and around Zurich, ranging from business hotels – complete with conference rooms and a bar/lounge – to environmentally friendly hotels with natural saunas.
Top hotspots where four star accommodation can be found include Kreis 2 and 8: two city districts bordering Lake Zurich. These popular recreation areas are made up of two islands (Ufenau and Lützelau) and can be reached by vintage paddle steamer or a walk through the hilly countryside.
Last but not least, the five star range. Not surprisingly, being the grand financial centre it is, Zurich has a good selection of luxury accommodation. There are approximately 10 properties spread over both the Old Town and the surrounding region. Most luxury hotels include a sauna, gym, massage and treatment rooms and gourmet restaurants, great for a grand trip with a loved one.
