"Warm welcome and friendly staff, however quite a modest property even for a BnB and at this price point. Small room with very small shower. Fine breakfast but only instant freeze dried coffee, and few options if you don't want a fry up. Immediate area full of litter on streets (like most of Barry). I know this isn't their fault but it's a location point. Overall a fine place to stay but I'm surprised current reviews are quite so high -- afterall, a warm and friendly welcome should be expected...

"The inside of the hotel looks dated and tired and is certainly in need of an uplift. The room I was assigned had air-conditioning that did not worked. When I asked, the counter staff stated that the entire hotel was facing this issue and hence could not cater to a room change. I was given an extra fan (which did not work, and I had to ask for a change), but even having two fans in the room at night still constituted a sauna and sleepless nights. And these two days also overlapped with a heatwave. A very belated internet checks showed reviews dating back years that the hotel has (and remains yet unfixed) AC problems. Also, after I got some laundry done, I was requested to pick up the clean laundry from the front counter myself, no reason was given. Throughout my travels, I have never had to self-pickup clean laundry, it is sad to note that even 3-star hotels in less established countries have done better than the Cardiff Marriott in this regard. The Marriott brand has always been trusted, and I had booked this stay without the slightest hesitation with no additional homework done. Instead of the satisfactory experience I had expected, I was disappointed that the condition of the property and the unresolved issues encountered during my stay did not reflect the standards I normally associate with the Marriott brand."

"On arrival I was told that as of yesterday parking is £5 though it was advised everywhere as free for the weekend. I argued this and they explained it is not their parking and have no control over it. I was told if I didn't pay it I would get £100 fine. Next part is more this website. I was led to believe that the facilities were available on my package however when you see the fine print it wasn't and the wording of it was terrible the staff looked and agreed it was not clear. But that was extra. I did have a good sleep however and the breakfast was ok. Limited choice though. Only scrambled eggs available for the fried breakfast. But the fruit and yogurt section was good. The arrival staff I felt were a bit difficult but the leaving staff were very helpful and friendly. Something is going on with the stair they make a strange noise but otherwise it was good. Not excellent."

"This was a great hotel for many reasons. The staff was very friendly including Omar at breakfast, the trainee receptionist gentleman and receptionist lady and David at the bar. The gym is the best I’ve seen - very extensive over two floor with a very wide range of equipment. It also has an amazing pool and spa. Only the breakfast quality was average but decent for the price. Room was great but better sound proofing needed. Very good location - heart of the city. Overall, it was excellent - would love to stay there again. It’s worth the price."

"We arrived early from overseas flight. Manager front desk told us we were too early, no rooms available. I asked did she want to check, she said no need, she knew. Said she would store our bags. That’s it. I asked for a map, she gave a booklet, said turn left, turn left, turn right. Much better reception at The Parkgate. Warm welcome, invited us to rest our feet, directions of things to do, 100% stay at The Parkgate. Avoid Hilton Cardiff."
