"Booked a 3 night stay for husband’s 60th birthday treat. We usually go for more functional and economical stays but this occasion was worth celebrating. We were lured in by the history of the hotel and that terrible event all those years ago. We came away realising that the extra expense for luxury is worth the investment. From the moment you’re greeted by the doorman and the concierge, you can see this stay is going to be a little bit different. Grand, does indeed describe the entrance area and bars around it. We’d arrived far earlier than expected and the team went the extra mile to get our room ready, calling us far earlier than we’d expected to check in. Luggage was delivered to our room. Only disappointment was our inward facing king had glazed windows you couldn’t see out of. However the room was gloriously spacious and styled with a contemporary twist of a grand style. It was comfortable throughout and small, luxury touches and attention to detail were clear to see. Breakfast was remarkably good. Whilst a buffet style, there was lots on offer and all food was fresh and of very high quality. Despite the large number of guests, at no time did we feel the experience too busy. All staff were extremely welcoming and appropriately friendly. All in all, I’m glad we spent the extra pounds. It was money well spent, for a few nights of luxury experience."

"The check-in was good with no queues, however the person spoke really fast. We had dinner at the Japanese steakhouse and felt that the waiting service could be improved. We enjoyed the food. The breakfast had a good selection, and I liked the card on the table indicating that the table was occupied. They also came around with a small strawberry smoothie, which was a nice touch. The tables were cleared quickly."

"My husband and I absolutely fell in love with this hotel. It was booked last minute for the last day of our trip in London before leaving, and happed to come up when I looked at hotels near Gatwick. We took about a 30 minute car ride to reach the property and were blown away when we got there. The scenery was so beautiful, and the hotel was in a good location. A lot of motorcycles do frequent the area, but we weren’t bothered by them. We dropped off our luggage since we got in so early, took a quick walk to Raykas for a delicious breakfast sandwich and then went on a hike up Box Hill, which was absolutely gorgeous. After we got back to the hotel and into our room (with air conditioning!) and freshened up before heading to the hotel bar for a couple drinks, then another short walk around Mole River before dinner at the hotel restaurant. They had a standard menu but also offered an Indian food menu, which we ordered from and enjoyed everything. We ordered wine from the bar and took it back to our room and soaked up the beautiful weather and the rest of our evening from the patio outside our room. We truly couldn’t believe our luck in finding this lovely hotel and later found out it’s existed here in some form since the 1200s, which the history buff in me found so exciting. We are going to plan a trip back JUST to stay in this hotel!"

"The room was good but bathroom plugs etc needed repair. Would have been nice if I didn’t have to ask for water to be delivered to room. The staff were very helpful but had to request room to be cleaned on one of the days. Had waited patiently until 4.00 p.m. We had been forgotten. On our last day there was a conference which was to last a week. Hundreds of people in reception area and lounge area. Very very noisy and nowhere for other guests to go to get away from the noise. We had booked out of our room, so couldn’t go there and it was 31 degrees outside, so far too hot for an elderly couple to go out. Sorry but will think twice before staying in your hotel again."
