If you don't like busy resorts and prefer something quieter and less touristy, then this is the place for you. We were a party of four (mum, dad & two teenage+ daughters). Our host, Elizabeth, asked us to message her when we were en route to Petrokefali and arranged to meet us in the village to guide us up to our villa. She was the perfect host - showing us around the villa, offering to provide us with anything we wanted and on hand for any problems or questions throughout our stay without being intrusive. Gifts of water, eggs and watermelons were a lovely touch both on arrival and throughout our stay.
The villa was ample size for our needs and could have easily accommodated another 4 people. All the facilities you would expect were available: washing machine, microwave, dishwasher, 2 bathrooms and several different places to sit to eat and relax. The pool wasn't particularly large but was very welcome given the temperature throughout our stay was around 30-32 degrees. The views from the villa particularly up on the terrace were spectacular (a hire car is a necessity).
Petrokefali is set in the central south of the island which is far quieter and less tourisy than the northern coastline. Having said that, there are still plenty of places to visit if you fancy venturing out. The ancient ruins of Phaistos are about a 10 minute drive away and the beaches of Matala and Kommos not much further on. The beautiful fishing town of Agai Galini has shops and plenty of restaurants and comes to life as the sun goes down.
All in all a beautiful, peaceful place to relax and take in the Cretan hospitality away from hustle and bustle.
