Limerick is a county with a huge love of sport and the city of Limerick was named European City of Sport in 2011. Limerick is often referred to as Ireland's Sporting Capital, and it's easy to see why, with Rugby, Hurling, Golf and Horseracing all extremely popular in the city.

Limerick is the home of Munster Rugby and at the heart of this is the impressive Thomond Park Stadium, the home pitch of the Munster Rugby province, one of the most successful rugby clubs in Europe. If you're a fan of sport then a trip to Thomond Park on match night is a must see. The atmosphere will make the hair stand on the back of your neck as the famous Thomond roar gets going. The stadium also has a museum dedicated to Munster Rugby with lots of famous memorabilia located here including the 2006 Heineken Cup and the match ball from the famous Munster victory over New Zealand at Thomond Park in 1978.

Enjoy the Races

If you're enjoy the odd punt at the dogs or the horses, then Limerick has two great course to enjoy a day or evening of quality racing. Limerick Racecourse is one of the most famous in Ireland and enjoys regular horse racing meets including the popular Christmas Festival which begins on St. Stephens Day (26th December). If greyhound racing is your cup of tea, Limerick Greyhound Stadium holds weekly meets that are perfect for large groups, as well as hen parties and stag parties who are planning a trip to Limerick.

Get on Your Bike

For fans of the great outdoors and in particular mountain biking, get along to Ballyhoura Park which boosts the largest mountain bike trail in Ireland - 98 km of trails. The trails range from a 6 km introductory trail to a 50 km trail for more experienced cyclists. Ballyhoura Park also has some great walking tours and other outdoor activities including horse riding, tennis, zorbing and extreme sports like paintballing. With the River Shannon running through the city, there is no shortage of water activities to do in Limerick.

Visit St. John's Castle

Situated at the heart of the medieval quarter in Limerick City is the iconic St John's Castle a 13th century castle that was reopened in 2013 following huge investment. The castle is now a popular visitor attraction with an interactive visitor experience showcasing over 800 years of Limerick history.

Out and About in Limerick

Other popular destinations to visit when you go to Limerick include the city's famous Milk Market, the impressive Limerick City Gallery of Art, the popular St. Mary's Cathedral (the oldest building in the city) and Crescent Shopping Centre, the largest in the province of Munster.

Another popular historic destination in Limerick is the ancient Medieval city of Askeaton, which has ruins dating back as far as the 14th century.

Shop ‘til You Drop

As well as the popular Crescent Shopping Centre, Arthur's Quay in the city centre and the Parkway Shopping Centre on Dublin Road are two shopping areas that are worth a visit with popular high street stores and wonderful boutique shops among them.
