Curlew Cottage, Hawick, Scottish Borders
Remote, peaceful, country cottage, great for nature lovers and walkers. Use of the shepherd's hut (and some logs for your stove) comes for free when you book Curlew Cottage, situated at Meadshaw Farm, Roberton, Hawick in the Scottish Borders. One well behaved dog is permitted. The cottage is 2 minutes up a good forest track, amidst some of the most beautiful and undiscovered countryside in the Scottish Borders. Forest Walks - Although Meadshaw is a working forest, and some of the nearby forest has been felled recently, you will find plenty of beautiful walks from your door and at nearby Craik Forest. Curlew Cottage and Shepherd's Hut is a real "get away from it all." Curlew Cottage: There is a double bedroom with double bed and doors out to a small patio. Bedroom 2 has 2 single beds. There is a shower room, utility room with washing machine and dishwasher, and a wonderfully light and airy kitchen/dining room with mezzanine above. The kitchen is well equipped with all mod cons (including remote controlled blinds for the Velux windows). It has a dining area and comfy seating area with freeview TV and internet connection. There is no mobile phone connection in the immediate area. Throughout the cottage, the natural stone floors are cosy and warm underfoot, heated by an external log burning boiler which also heats the nearby farmhouse, and provides as much hot water as you want. The Shepherd's Hut: The hut is next to the cottage, and provides a unique extra space for relaxing in front of the wood burning stove. Logs and kindling are supplied. It is simply furnished, and accessed by wooden steps. Outside: There is a paved sitting area with lovely views of the hills and the river. There is also an area in the old hay barn opposite the cottage, which can be used for boots, bikes etc if the weather is wet. There is parking outside the cottage. The owners live 15 metres away in Meadshaw Farmhouse, and are on hand to give advice if required, but are equally happy to leave you to enjoy the peace and quiet, this being one of those rare places where you will hear little or no traffic noise and see only the stars at night. Surrounding Area: Immediately from the door there are miles of waymarked tracks and paths which are perfect for walking, cycling and horse riding. The surrounding hills are also on your doorstep, and provide lovely walks to the nearby hill lochs - Broadlea and Branxholme Easter and Wester Lochs. The river below the cottage has several pebbly "beach" areas and pools where you can enjoy a paddle or wild swim in the summer months! Depending on the season, you may well be rewarded with sightings of the abundant wildlife around the cottage, from the native red squirrel, otter and barn owl, to local woodland birds such as the siskin and woodpecker. There are also osprey and gosshawk in the area, and in the Springtime, you will hear the skylark, oyster-catcher and curlew from the cottage. Livestock is kept at the farm, including rare-breed hebridean sheep, chickens and ducks. We also have 2 little dogs and a cat. Cyclists may store their bikes in one of the barns, and grazing and stabling (at an extra charge) is available for horse riders bringing their own horses. Please enquire about bringing your horse. Activities in the Area: For cyclists and walkers, Meadshaw Forest joins up with nearby 10,000 acre Craik Forest and there are miles of forest tracks to explore from your door. Further afield, more mountain biking is available at Innerliethen, Glentress (Peebles), Newcastleton and Keilder Water. Horse riding and golf are available at Ashkirk (7 miles) where there is also a pub and restaurant. Hawick, the local woollen mill town is 10 miles away. It has restaurants, supermarkets and shops, a leisure centre and a lovely cinema, cafe and heritage centre. Hawick is known for its' cashmere shops, its' tradition of rugby and the annual Common Riding Festival. For a day out, you can visit one of the beautiful Border Abbey towns, such as Jedburgh or Melrose, or take the scenic 1.5 hour drive to Edinburgh by car. The new Borders railway will get you to Edinburgh in under an hour from Galashiels. Green Tourism: At Meadshaw Farm we are working towards environmentally friendly living. All white goods at the cottage are A rated or better, heating/hot water is fuelled by local, sustainably managed woodland and the garden and farm are managed without commercial fertilisers. Provided for you: All linen/towels, heating, electricity and logs for the shepherd's hut are included. One well-behaved dog is welcome. Please note there is no dog proof enclosed area. Please keep your dog under control when enjoying the outdoors, seating/patio area. Smoking is not permitted within the cottage.

We had a wonderful stay at Curlew Cottage. Very comfortable and had everything we needed. Loved the shepherds hut … very cosy when the fire is lit .. great location easy reach of Jedburgh , Kielder water and Forrest . Will definately stay again but for longer
Stunning place to relax, take in the beautiful scenery and enjoy the local hospitality.
The owners are fantastic hosts.
The cottage is super well equipped and super comfortable.
The week was just perfect.
We are looking forwards to staying again.
Thank you Danielle and Bill.
Lovely property and welcoming place. 20 minutes drive from anywhere really; that was the appeal. We spent 5 days there without using the car, just walking, sitting, reading, going in the river.
Well equipped small cottage. Was just 2 of us but the attractive mezzanine with 2 singles looked good. We used the shepherd's hut as a semi outdoor sitting room.
Overall, a lovely accommodation in a beautiful, quiet valley. Oh, and with great star gazing potential.
Absolutely beautiful cottage set in stunning countryside. Lovely hosts who were extremely friendly and helpful with any queries we had. Would definitely recommend and hope to return
It’s such a lovely, warm, clean cottage in a beautiful location with the kindest host. My partner and I stayed there as part of our trip to Kielder Observatory, it’s remote enough to enjoy bit of star gazing all from comfort master bed; through the skylight. We looked forward to staying again.
Beautiful forest location, perfect for walking with stunning views. Lovely house - well appointed kitchen; fabulous hot, powerful, large shower; good beds - everything you need for a great stay. Underfloor heating keeps it super cosy and the log burner chucks out serious heat! Friendly helpful owners - would recommend for sure.

Gorgeous warm comfortable cottage
The property was so comfortable and well equipped we had a great stay, the shepherds hut is a really nice touch as well. We also really appreciated the homemade cake and bottle of wine as well as fresh eggs (as well as the hens outside to gather eggs every day). We were made to feel really comfortable and welcome by the lovely family and felt that nothing was too much trouble. Would highly recommend this place.

Lovely cottage in a fantastic location
We had a fantastic 4 day break in the new year. The weather was very cold but the cottage and shepherd’s hut were cosy and there were some excellent walks right on our doorstep. The children loved playing with Tilly and Tarka, the 2 dogs and Danielle and her family were excellent hosts. One place we would recommend visiting was Born in the Borders - a micro brewery and gin distillery. The lunch there was delicious and the kids had an amazing time grass sledging whilst we sampled the gin!

Beautiful cottage !
We had a wonderful 5 days at the cottage. The scenery was utterly breathtaking and the cottage was just beautiful. Spotlessly clean and had everything we needed. Homemade cakes were a lovely welcoming treat, plus fresh eggs and wine in the fridge, we felt so lucky. The river below the cottage was amazing, our son loved swimming and playing in it for hours upon end. Our hosts made us feel very welcome and we’d love to visit again soon. Xxx

Cosy home, wonderful nature, very kind owners
The lovely couple, owning this property, is capable of creating a little peace of Scottish heaven on earth. The beauty and serenity of the landscape, the cosiness of the immaculate cleaned house, the romantic shepherd's wagon with fireplace, the children friendly farm animals (chickens, horses, dogs, sheep) make this cottage one of the best we ever visit. The barn across the cottage is perfect for bbq-ing or enjoying a warm cup of tea, when the Scottish 'soft days' play hard on you. The kindness and friendliness of the owners, however, made it the best place we have ever enjoyed our vacation at. It felt like a true home away from home. We will absolutely visit this location again.

Very peaceful and beautiful
Daniele and Bill were very welcoming and helpful, lovely cake on arrival (much needed). The cottage was stunning and cosy, it had all you needed.
Beautiful scenery and walks, we have never been to Scotland before but, if it is all like our first visit then we are definitely going back.
The shepherd's hut was a bonus, it was a warm retreat for our children, they basically lived in it for the week it was their space and we were not allowed.
Lovely place, lovely family the whole area was lovely along with the parts of Scotland we saw.
Thanks to Patrick for keeping my 2 entertained they thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Thanks again to Daniele, Bill, Patrick and Tarka (the dog)

“Lovely Cottage, fully equipped, quiet location”
Amazing little cottage, absolutely perfect for exploring the Scottish Borders.
The house was astonishing clean, gorgeously decorated, with everything possible you could need!, Found cottage exceeded our expectations.
The facilities were all in good working order and there was an excellent range of books and games to use in the evenings.
One of our highlight of the week was go walking to the nearest loch (around 1 hour walking), Danielle (the owner) let her lovely Terrier dog come with us, my two daughters enjoyed every day!!!.
Danielle & Bill (owners) have put a lot thought into making our stay a pleasant one and the welcome cake on arrival were very welcoming !
Never been so well catered for. We loved the location, the cottage, the kind welcome and the accessories for the kids.
Will definitely be back!!

A fantastic break everything I had hoped it would be and more
Bill and Daniele made me feel so welcome they are a lovely couple and their two dogs Tarka and Tilly are very nice. I was really needing a break and wanted somewhere I could take my puppy. The cottage appealed to me as it was far enough away from the town but close enough if you wanted to go to the shops or eat out.
I was not disappointed at all we had wonderful walks on our doorstep and the views and cottage were perfect.
We also had the added bonus of the shepherds hut with it’s lovely wood burning stove. I spent the late afternoon chilling with a book and a glass of wine snuggled up in the hut.
First class break and I will be back again, Bill and Daniele are such genuine people.
If you are looking for a quiet time to chill and enjoy the outdoors this is the place to go
Thank you both xxx
Zeer mooie en rustige omgeving, volop in de natuur.
Huisje bij een kleine boerderij, midden in de natuur, via grindweg te bereiken. Zeer vriendelijke gastvrouw/heer. Veel uitstappen mogelijk. Prachtige streek. Daguitstap naar Edinburgh is mogelijk.
From start to finish, what a wonderful stay! Beautifully situated, with such care and attention to detail. The conversion is clean, modern and spacious while still feeling homely and right at home in the middle of a working farm. Our family was made to feel right at home from the moment we arrived, and our children had the chance to feed the animals and enjoy farm fresh eggs! My son hasn't stopped talking about how much he loved the little lamb and the chickens, and will tell anyone who'll listen about his hot cocoa in the shepherd's hut by the fire. Stunning views, beautiful walks, peace and quiet, and recommended for a couples getaway and family holidays alike. Memories made for life, and we can't wait to visit again!
The cottage is beautiful and clean. Underfloor heating is lovely. Beautiful hand-written note on arrival, with advise on where to walk. Surrounding forest is beautiful. Views are lovely and great to see woodpecker on the bird feeders through the window.
Daniele is a very welcoming, generous and helpful host - and the cottage is really well appointed throughout.
Is an excellent base for exploring the Borders
