Letterfrack Travel Guide

Letterfrack is a small vibrant village in Connemara, County Galway. Situated near the sea on the Wild Atlantic Way, Letterfrack has a large village green overlooked by the fabulous Diamond Mountain. It is near here that you can find the Connemara National Park. Connemara is a popular tourist destination and the area has a strong association with traditional Irish culture. Connemara is part of Ireland’s Irish speaking Gealtacht community.

Things to See and Do in Letterfrack

When staying in Letterfrack you will want to visit the Connemara National Park. Covering 2,957 hectares, the park takes in scenic mountain ranges, bogs, heaths, woodlands and grasslands. The park offers a number of walking trails including one trail all the way to the summit of the Diamond Mountain. From here you can take in a breath-taking view of the National Park, right out to sea.

Oysters have been farmed in Ballinakill Bay in Connemara for generations, making it one of the oldest oyster farms in the country. Take a farm tour to see how oysters are grown over three years from seed to plate. As part of the tour you can taste the oysters and even purchase some to bring home.

Make the most of Letterfrack’s sea side location with a scenic wildlife nature tour of Latterfrack Bay. Explore one of Europe’s most scenic and well protected harbours which is home to many varieties of fish, otters, dolphins, sea birds, shellfish, seaweed and kelp. Letterfrack Sea Safari run tours in a purpose-built boat with an under water viewing panel to discover the hidden world beneath the surface.

Letterfrack is renowned for its live traditional Irish music. Each year, musical festivals are organised in summer; Bog Week and late autumn; plus “Sea Week”. These events see musicians and music lovers gather for live music sessions with talks and discussions around environmental matters.

If you fancy some down time, pick up a fishing rod from the local hardware store and take a fishing trip from Letterfrack Pier.

Eating and Drinking in Letterfrack

Letterfrack has a great choice of places to eat and drink during your stay. The village has three pubs and you can choose from bar food at Clover Fox or dine in style at the Rosleague Manor Hotel. Diners can enjoy locally caught seafood and the popular Connemara lamb in these restaurants.

Just off the village green you can find a welcoming café for a mid-morning snack or lunch with a tea shop located in the National Park Visitors Centre.

Letterfrack is a welcoming place for families and children as all premises are child friendly with special family days held on the village green during the summer. Art and nature workshops are run on a regular basis for children at the Connemara National Park.
