Take a pleasant ride out to this beach on a south side peninsula and enjoy sunbathing, snorkeling and splashing about in the blue-green water.

Not far from Trinidad is the popular and generally sunny Ancón Beach. Join local residents and tourists on the white sands as you sunbathe on the pretty beach, swim in the warm water or relax under the shade of one of the thatched umbrellas.

The crushed shell beach is about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) long, perfect for a morning run or sunset stroll. Along the shoreline, look for bits of colorful shells brought in by the tides. During the day, build sand castles and watch playful crabs poking up out of their circular holes and scurrying sideways across the sand. Rent a lounge chair and order a tropical rum cocktail to enjoy under your umbrella or lay your beach towel on the unshaded section of the beach to enhance your tan.

Wade in the gentle waves of the blue-green sea and snorkel over the natural reef to see colorful tropical fish. The beach is part of the Ancón Peninsula, which has dozens of dive sites. Rent scuba gear to explore its coral ridges and tunnels. Look for black coral, sponges and gorgonians or sea fans.

When you get hungry, order snacks from vendors who offer service direct to your lounge chair or walk to the nearby beach hotel to eat at its snack bar.

By the most direct route, Ancón Beach is about 7 miles (11 kilometers) southwest of Trinidad. The beach itself is free, but expect to pay for use of the beach umbrellas and lounge chairs. For exceptional views, drive or bike out of the city on a slightly longer route toward the village of La Boca. Ride along the ocean, making stops at some of the other less crowded beaches on the way. At Ancón Beach, use the free parking area off the street. A bus runs to the area. If you miss the bus, call for a taxi.
