Visit the winter home of President Harry S. Truman to see where some of America’s most important post-war decisions were made.

Making a visit to the only presidential site in the state of Florida is like being on a mesmerizing journey back to post-war America. Many find it hard to believe that numerous decisions that shaped the world during the late 1940s were made from a waterfront property in the Florida Keys. This winter vacation house was home to President Harry S. Truman for 175 days. Since 1991 the Harry S. Truman Little White House has operated as a historic site and museum. It attracts visitors from around the world who want to learn the story of one of the United States’ boldest presidents.

Join a guided tour to get the most from your visit. Led by a passionate guide, you’ll see Truman’s story unfold as you make your way through the rooms. Tours are offered every 20 minutes. See original furnishings, including Truman’s poker table and the bed he slept in. The Harry S. Truman Little White House has been visited by many other presidents and former presidents over the years, including Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton.

Sit back to watch two short films that outline the importance of the former naval officers’ quarters and learn about the summits, meetings and pivotal moments in history that unfolded within its walls. The Florida Keys were a strategic location for many political issues involving South and Central America. The Little White House was used by President Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

After you’ve explored inside, stroll around the picturesque botanical gardens that surround the building. Covering nearly an entire acre (0.4 hectare), the gardens contain many species of tropical plants and flowers. An ongoing restoration project is bringing the gardens back to their original 1949 plan.

The Harry S. Truman Little White House is located within the Old Town district of Key West, easily reached on foot or by bicycle from within the area, or by car or taxi from farther afield. Pay-and-display parking is available at the nearby Mallory Square. The Little White House is open daily and the admission fee includes a guided 1-hour tour.
