"Great hotel in central Bologna"
The staff at this hotel could not be more gracious. The rooms were very clean, the marble bathroom was wonderful. The continental breakfast was delicious. It was within walking distance of most historic sights and the food market. A special thank you to the manager, Roberto, for all his understanding, patience and help.

"Nice hotel in good location."
The hotel is an easy 10 min walk down Independence street from the train station. There were many cafes, restaurants, and shopping opportunities nearby. The room was very comfortable with nice bathroom amenities. Breakfast was very good with a variety of cold meats, hard boiled eggs, fruit, cakes, yogurt, breads , juices and coffee. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful; the reception staff spoke English (if necessary).

Hotel Porta San Mamolo

Vicolo del Falcone, 6/8, Bologna - Map
Hotel Porta San Mamola is a unique hotel in a good location - maybe not for everybody, but it has a lot of character and charm. The layout is curious (probably the result of an initially small hotel expanding). To get to my room from reception, I walked to the end of a garden (the breakfast room was in the middle) - this might be less fun in wet weather (although umbrellas are placed in strategic positions), but I was blessed with excellent weather for my week in Bologna - I had breakfast outside every day. Some of the rooms are more conventionally located in the main block. First impression is that the hotel is slightly out of the way, but it was ten minutes' walk into the centre (and on a wet evening, there are two restaurants in the same road).

"Close to the action!"
When we finally found the hotel, no help from TomTom here as the roads are closed to the private car and the immediate area has been pedestrianised, we were very pleased with the hotel and surprised at its 2* rating as it deserves much better than that. The staff were extremely helpful, parking the car is more of an issue but directions to an underground Car Park were given which is about 15 minutes walking time.

Il Convento dei Fiori di Seta

Via Orfeo 34/4, Bologna - Map
Cannot fault this hotel in any way. We've stayed in many hotels all over Europe and have to say this is one of the vest. The room was very 'different' (room 42) - having its very own balcony overlooking the bedroom area! The shower was wonderful and the facilities were exellent. The concierfe/porter/receptionist was a lovely chap - very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The walk into the 'main' city area was a bit of a distance, but well worth it as its situation was quiet. Take a good pair of comfortable walking shoes/trainers/boots for the city itself!

"Good location but quad rooms have small fourth bed"
The hotel was easy to find, being just off the main shopping street down from the station. It is 15 minutes from the station and 7 from the main square in the centre of town. Everything is walkable - we had a day and a half and did everything easily. Our quadruple room was clean and comfortable, but the fourth bed is only suitable for a child up to about 5ft 4 as it is short and narrow. The aircon was pretty ineffective, but we could get a breeze through the room so it wasn't too hot. We left windows open at night but were woken early by a lot of noise outside the hotel both mornings. Breakfast wasn't included but was cheap and worth the money - simple but enough to keep you going. The staff were generally helpful, but not when it came to restaurants as they just recommended one run by a friend nearby which has so-so reviews. We struggled to find good restaurants, only finding one on our doorstop as we were leaving (Restaurant Enzo on junction of Via Galleria and Via Riva di Reno). Overall very good value for a quad room - a few niggles but we still enjoyed our stay and the location suited us well.

Pocket Guide: Bologna Historic Center Hotels

Famed for its medieval towers, Bologna's well-preserved historic center is where visitors can climb the Asinelli Tower for panoramic views of the city's red-tiled rooftops, including the Basilica of San Petronico on Piazza Maggiore. Extending from the piazza, over 40 km of porticos provide shelter for pedestrians. About a 10-minute stroll east, the venerable University of Bologna dates to 1088.
