Liverpool City Guide

Home to some of the biggest and best British bands in history, top museums and with a rich maritime history, this compact northern English city is one of Britain’s finest cultural destinations.

Liverpool, once home to one of the busiest ports in the world, has now been transformed into a cultural enclave. The city has a fascinating Victorian history and musical heritage of which some of the most famous British musicians belong, including the great Beatles. Much of the historic port area of Liverpool was awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 2004, and in 2008, the city was named the cultural capital of Europe.

Make sure you go to the Albert Dock and check out what is the cultural heart of the city. The complex, which was once home to some of the largest ships in the world, is now a bustling area crammed with restaurants, bars and galleries. Try a plate scouse, a typical northern English stew, in a waterfront restaurant. Check out the Merseyside Maritime Museum and brush up on your knowledge about the maritime history of the city. The area on the waterfront is also the location of one of the most iconic buildings in the city, the high Royal Liver Building.

The Beatles are, undoubtedly, the most famous band to emerge from this awesome city and are a big part of the rich musical life of Liverpool. Discover the Beatles Story and how the most famous band in the world started its career right here, or attend a concert at one of the oldest venues in the city, the Liverpool Empire Theatre.

The people of Liverpool are avid lovers of their sports, and if you visit the city in the chilly winter months, you'll see them proudly waving their scarves. Go and see Liverpool Football Club play in the historic Anfield Road Stadium or watch the local amateur play in the local Sefton Park. Want to get active yourself? Try hiking in the greenery of Sefton Park, one of the many green areas in the picturesque town.

Liverpool is a city that appeals to a wide variety of travellers and is suitable for every budget. Whether your passion is sports, music or history, there will no doubt be something in this cosy northern city that will appeal to you.
