Encounter many of the highlights of the city along the wings of this lively esplanade running through the heart of Old Havana.

The Paseo de Martí is a picturesque and spacious promenade flanked by gorgeous trees. Specks of sunlight permeating the leaves add brightness to the red, blue and white cobbles that make up this lively street. Sit on a marble bench and watch the world pass you by in this serene esplanade.

For centuries, the avenue was associated with the Cuban bourgeoisie. Admire the elegant mansions that housed affluent families in the 19th century. Inspect the various bronze lions, marble features and other signs of prosperity that adorn the boulevard.

Look for the Fuente de la India fountain at the southern point. Built from white marble in 1837, this majestic water feature portrays an indigenous woman and four dolphins. Explore the adjacent Parque de la Fraternidad for its busts of U.S. and Latin American leaders to stress the theme of brotherhood in the Americas.

As you move north, you will encounter the lavish El Capitolio, which used to hold the Cuban Congress. Take a guided tour of this spectacular building to learn about its rich architectural details and the huge financial outlays involved in its construction.

Continue along the esplanade, capturing photos of the excellent Gran Teatro de la Habana, Parque Central and the charming colonnades of the Baroque buildings. Purchase artisanal treasures from the various street vendors. Reach the Parque de los Enamorados and the remains of a 19th-century prison at the northern end of the boulevard.

Note that this tree-laden street was initially designed by French landscape architect Jeane-Claude Nicolas Forestier in 1772. It is also known among locals as the Paseo de Prado, which is one of its many former names.

The Paseo de Martí is the line separating the Centro Habana area from its adjacent Old Havana district. The Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta marks its northern point, with the Parque de la Fraternidad and the metro bus terminus at the other end. Visit nearby sights, such as the Bacardi Building, the Manzana de Gomez and the Museum of the Revolution.
