"I rated my stay very high at the Mermaid Inn because it was a special detour in the very charming city of Rye. The inn was perfectly located. The food was excellent, from delicious fish and chips on the pub to a 5 star dinner in the dining room. Keep in mind this is a very old building with crooked steps and low ceilings. It may not be suitable for everyone. Our room was adorable and very comfortable. "

"The highlights were the size of the room and the breakfast (the bacon was particularly delicious). The big draw back was that access the swimming pool was a £20 extra charge per adult and £10 for a child which wasn’t particularly clear at the point of booking."

"We recently stayed at this hotel and had a mixed experience. The breakfast was excellent, with a great choice of foods, and the service from the staff throughout our stay was genuinely outstanding. Unfortunately, the bedrooms and en-suite facilities were very dated and in need of a thorough clean and modernisation. We were disappointed on arrival, although the staff did change our room without any trouble. The second room had a slightly larger bed, but the overall standard still fell well below the expectations set by the photos on the website. The bar and breakfast room have clearly been refurbished and look beautiful, but from the stairs upwards the hotel is in real need of some TLC. The stair carpet is threadbare, and there are visible cracks in the walls, ripped wallpaper, dirty paintwork, and thick dust in several areas. The staff and breakfast were definite highlights, but the accommodation and general upkeep let the experience down. "

"My son has a duck feather allergy. We asked at front reception if we can use some hypoallergenic hollow Fiber pillows to which their reply why house keeping is gone and we don’t know where they store them. My son ended up getting a full on body rash and couldn’t sleep all night. "

"Lovely hotel. Very glad I took their offer to book table for dinner on first night, as we struggled to find somewhere on the 2nd night that had a table. Rye was lovely, suspect we will go back one day and would happily stay at same hotel again. We had great view out to Camber castle and walked there and to great bird hide nearby to it."

"Lovely room, great food in restaurant. Hotel doesn't do breakfast in week but lovely cafe next door doing breakfasts etc. Car park close too, have to pay but free 7pm to 7am."

"This is an okay place to stay while visiting St Leonard’s and Hastings. It seems to be a family-run place and full breakfast is provided and is good.Quick walk to the train and to the beach and laundromat. Some improvements have been made to the property which are cosmetic and actually quite silly. There was an attempt to make this old hotel look opulent while neglecting things like upgraded beds and bedding, soundproofing rooms, replacing broken window seals and fresh paint on the exterior. Perhaps even by previous owners. Not sure. So, while the staff are friendly and seem eager to please, the faded glory of the place is rather sad. Windows that open and peekaboo views from our room was nice. Plenty of hot water for the shower and some toiletries provided also was a plus. All in all a good place to stay on a budget but wear earplugs or a noise machine in your headphones to get some sleep."
