St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg is a wonderful place to come for a quick trip or a family vacation.

The national capital of Moscow is located 390 miles southeast of St. Petersburg, while Koltushi is 11 miles to the east.

If you're here with the family, set aside some time to explore the much-loved child-friendly activities. Pack a daypack and head to the Horrors of St. Petersburg Museum and Divo Ostrov. The St. Petersburg Wax Museum is also heaps of fun.

If you love animals and wildlife, put the Leningradskiy Zoopark on your to-do list. Be sure to ask at the entrance about hands-on activities and where to find the zoo's rarer specimens.

If you'd like to see some of the local plant species, a visit to the St. Petersburg Botanical Garden and the Botanical Gardens would be a great idea.

On a fine day, grab some lunch and find a quiet corner at one of the area's picturesque green spaces, such as Summer Garden or Petrovsky Park. You'll also find plenty of room to lay about on the grass at Moskovsky Victory Park and Verkhniy Park.

Spending time among nature is vital for our well-being. If you get the opportunity to see New Holland Island or Kirov Park, just do it!

Expand your knowledge by spending some time at one of the area's intriguing cultural institutions. The Museum of the Defense and Siege of Leningrad and the Folk Literature Museum offer a range of collections that are sure to capture your interest. The Coffee Museum and the St. Petersburg Museum of Dolls are also well worth a visit.

Marine enthusiasts can stay anchored at the C-189 Submarine Museum, a treasure house of important artifacts and tales of the sea. If the winds permit, continue steering your way through this region's seafaring history at the Icebreaker Krasin.

Make a stop at Planetarium or Pulkovo Observatory to see a dynamic range of fascinating scientific displays and artifacts. The Vasily Dokuchaev Museum of Soil Science and the LabyrinthUm are two more great options worth stopping at if you're not short on time.

From the second you step through the doors, it's plain to see that the collections of the Arctic and Antarctic Museum and the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography are a labor of love. Staring back from behind the protective glass, these striking specimens are sure to spark your imagination. The Zoological Museum and the Russian Museum of Ethnography are also not to be missed.

St. Petersburg is a hub of artistic energy, with gallery spaces galore. Start off your tour of this creative hotspot at the State Russian Museum and the Hermitage Storage Facility. If you can fit them in, the Academy of Fine Arts Museum and the Museum of Applied Art are also well worth checking out.

History comes alive at the Matyushin House and the Kirov Apartment Museum thanks to their variety of informative displays. The Kirovsky Zavod Museum of History and Technology and the State Museum of the Political History of Russia are also worthy choices.

The Narva Triumphal Arch and Constitutional Court of Russia are certainly worth visiting, even if history isn't your forte. You might also like to get out the camera and snap some photos at the Manege Central Exhibition Hall and Cabin of Peter the Great.

Admire the stunning waterway views and feats of civil engineering at Italian Bridge and Blagoveshchensky Bridge. You could also cross Liteyny Bridge or Lions Bridge and gaze down dreamily upon the distant waters underneath.

Military history buffs will enjoy a walk around Peter and Paul Fortress and Kronstadt Fortress, two striking fortified positions. The time-worn walls of Gosudarev Bastion have also seen their fair share of battles.

Some of the region's most significant people have called State Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace and Catherine Palace and Park in Tsarskoye Selo "home" throughout the years. Be sure to get out your camera as you take in their impressive architectural features and plush interiors. You might also like to stroll through the grounds and hear some stories at Peterhof Palace and Garden and Alexander Palace.

Sometimes dramatic, sometimes darkly romantic, St. Michael's Castle is an awesome monument from the Middle Ages.

The area's spiritual side is evidenced at Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood and Kazan Cathedral. St. Isaac's Cathedral and Trinity Cathedral are also recommended holy places.

Before you pack your bags and head back home, be sure to stop by some of St. Petersburg's other attractions. Red Bridge and the Loft Project Etagi are some possible options. Also, consider visiting Palace Bridge and Birzhevoy Bridge if your schedule allows.
