Wildlife spotting, an ancient castle and seaside relaxation are just some of the charms of this coastal resort on the island of Anglesey off the coast of Wales.

Beaumaris is a seaside town on the banks of the Menai Strait, the narrow strip of sea that separates the island of Anglesey and mainland Wales. With a medieval castle, a disused 19th-century jail, beautiful scenery and wildlife, it is an appealing holiday destination for culture and nature lovers. Go on a puffin-spotting adventure, spend lazy days on a beach and explore ancient ruins.

A highlight of any visit to the town is Beaumaris CastleOpens in a new window, a 13th-century stronghold built as part of a ring of castles across North Wales for King Edward I. Venture down ancient passageways, see the old chapel and marvel at the imposing towers of this UNESCO World Heritage site. Picnic on the surrounding grassy areas from where you can admire the castle’s stunning exterior.

Continue your historical journey with a visit to Beaumaris Gaol. Gain an insight into the lives of the prisoners who were kept here in the 19th century. Learn about Richard Rowlands, the second and last man to be hanged in the jail, in 1862. See more glimpses of the past over at Beaumaris Courthouse. Built in the early 17th century, it is one of the oldest courthouses in Britain.

Aside from the fascinating history, there is much more to see and do in Beaumaris. Take in the scenic surroundings from your seat on the beach then stroll along the Victorian pier. Go on a boat cruise of the Menai Strait and around nearby Puffin Island. Spot a rich variety of birdlife, including puffins, guillemots and razorbills. You might also see dolphins during your excursion at sea.

When you are back in the town, go on a shopping trip in the boutiques and stores. Purchase handcrafted goods and browse artwork by local artists in the galleries.

Reach Beaumaris by driving across the Menai Suspension Bridge from mainland Wales. Enjoy a holiday filled with history, scenic beauty and wildlife adventures.
