For a fun day of shopping, dining and people-watching, head for the Embarcadero – the old wharf area which runs along the waterfront through the Financial District from AT&T Park to Pier 45. Here you can take a jog along the shoreline, wander round the shops, watch the street entertainers or chill out in a café. Locals come here for some early morning fresh air, to unwind after a day at the office or to meet friends and family at weekends, while visitors appreciate the historic buildings and photogenic panoramas across the bay.Get a feel for the area by taking a stroll along the flat, pedestrian-friendly waterfront which offers a refreshing contrast to the traffic and hills of the city centre, then pause to admire the numerous piers that jut out into the bay. Pier 39 is one of the most popular, lined with shops, restaurants, rides and other attractions – including its famous resident sea lions! Pier 33 is another lively place to take a breather while you watch the ferries coming and going from spooky Alcatraz Island. The clock tower of the Ferry Building is an unmistakable local landmark. Stop here to admire the Spanish Colonial architecture and fabulous views of the Bay Bridge, and maybe treat yourself to a snack in one of the friendly bistros before continuing your walk. Leave enough time to visit the popular tourist hotspot of Fisherman’s Wharf, where a Wharf Pass entitles you to reduced entry to its many attractions, including the Aquarium of the Bay.The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market brings over 100 stalls to the pavement outside the Ferry Building every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, selling organic fruit and vegetables, flowers, dairy products and other homespun goodies. The Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture runs cookery classes on market days, so you can buy the produce and then learn how to turn it into delicious recipes! If you prefer to let other people do all the hard work, the market also sells pre-prepared ready meals and freshly baked bread and cakes to take home. The Embarcadero Center provides a modern contrast to the historic piers and market halls. This shopping, dining and entertainment complex is one of the area’s latest attractions, with a programme of films, art exhibits and a seasonal ice rink.
