Bristol Grand Hotel By Sunday

2/10 Terrible

"We stayed at this hotel twice during our trip because it had been recommended by a Bristol local. When we later described our first room to them, they were horrified and apologized for suggesting it. Our first stay started with what I can only describe as the hotel's version of a welcome drink: a full beer left behind by the previous guest. Not an empty bottle hidden somewhere—a full beer sitting in the room when we arrived. The window sill was filthy, the view consisted of rooftop air-conditioning units and a piss bottle, and one of the hotel's two elevators was out of service. The remaining elevator was frequently occupied by housekeeping staff moving large trolleys between floors, making waits even longer. We reported the issues to the front desk and later through Expedia. Based on the condition of the room, we asked to cancel a second stay scheduled a few days later. The hotel refused despite receiving details of the complaint and photographic evidence. To their credit, they moved us to a larger preferred room for the second stay. It was cleaner, but still tired and worn, with stained carpets and obvious signs of deferred maintenance. Hotels make mistakes. What disappointed us was the response. The hotel acknowledged the complaint, documented the evidence, and still offered no refund, credit, or goodwill gesture. Bristol is a fantastic city with no shortage of places to stay. If we return, we’ll be trying one of the others."

The Gainsborough Bath Spa

"The Gainsborough is a fantastic hotel and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It's location is perfect for the Roman Baths, Abbey and all the other sights. Parking is in a small private car park next to the college so make sure you drop off your luggage at the hotel and speak to concierge who will help you with parking. Check In was simple and we were greeted by friendly staff. Every member of staff we came across including the cleaners were super friendly. Our room was spotless and a good size. I booked a deluxe twin and I will miss that bed. It was super comfy and we had a great nights sleep. Due to in room telephone being down, the minibar was complimentary which was great. Soft drinks and water which for us was perfect. The bathroom was clean and tidy. There are plenty of facilities on site which unfortunately I didn't have time to make use of so that's my reason for planning another stay at this wonderful hotel in the not too distant future. I'd highly recommend anyone thinking of visiting bath to stay at this hotel, you won't be disappointed."

"Great location, however the idea of being awoken earlier than anticipated by faulty air conditioning. This triggered the in room gas leak detection alarm, which the on site staff responded to quickly by turning the air conditioning unit off. Silenced the alarm, but turned a/c off, and we were the up w hours earlier than anticipated for early departure, which was the reason for staying close by. Appreciate these things happen and grateful for alarm, however presume ac had not been serviced."

"The room we booked was spot on until the water failed in the bathroom, there was no water at all after a hour going back and forth talking to reception and staff they said they had found another room two floors up and we could use it's bathroom and keep our room, after some more discussion we said we would move to that room as going back and forth for the bathroom was not practical. When we got to the room it was very poor dust everywhere TV remote taped together and a TV that kept freezing never did get it to work, just one chair to sit on and it looked like it had been thrown out by a charity shop, the bathroom was not suitable as we need a walk in shower, due to the delay in moving us and sorting out our problems it was now to late for us to go out and we still could not get washed, we cancelled our plans for the night. I went back to reception and asked if this was the best and only room available in the hotel and was told that's all we have got, I at this point lost the will to live, I just collected the key cards for the room and handed back the temporary one they had given me. In the morning the manger offered me a discount on another stay or a small refund, what a joke tha staff at night did not have a clue about what they should do or could do without a manager approval. I would never stay there again even if you paid me."

"Beautiful hotel with lovely grounds and an excellent spa area. The room was comfortable and fortunately the weather wasn't too warm, as the air conditioning wasn't working during our stay. There was also a persistent clicking noise from the air vent system near the room entrance, which was quite annoying, especially at night. Aside from those issues, we had a very pleasant stay and found the hotel to be well maintained and relaxing."

"Be aware the venue's also a wedding venue & wedding guests will take priority over your booking & your room will be downgraded if the management feel the need. I booked an Executive Suite 2 weeks before my stay which should have been in the main building or Coach House, but 72-48 hours prior I was notified there'd be a wedding disco taking place in the Vendange Suite until 12am & that I may well end up in a room above it, which is exactly what happened. We entered the room, number 253, at 6pm'ish to hear banging music from downstairs. We were completely disappointed with the room which was small & looked nothing like what I'd seen during booking. We returned to reception asking to be moved or upgraded and although the staff were nice we were told there was nothing they could do as they were fully booked. They checked if their sister hotel could accommodate us but unfortunately not. I expressed I'll try to find another hotel. There was no attempt to remedy the situation by reception or the manager who was present. I then spent 2 hours on and off the phone with Expedia who began negotiations with the hotel. There must have been some misunderstanding as I was called by reception saying if I want a refund then I must vacate the room. I was shocked at this response. A second attempt with Expedia saw us offered a £25 refund by the hotel, not great. Small TV, with broken remote that you had to get out of bed to use wha buttons did work. I went downtown for diner to avoid the music."

"Staff friendly and helpful on Check in , the rooms and bathrooms definitely need updating which didn’t include breakfast so was quite steep for one night . No air con so it was really hot in the rooms . It was a good location , no complaints there but I think the room fee was too much considering how much they need modernising ."
